Similar to the Garda ID thread, anybody know how long it should take?

I need one for a foreign work visa, so I applied last week. They told me it would take 3-4 weeks. Anyone know why it takes that long, or is that just a standard answer they give everybody?

I would've thought it was just a matter of typing my name and address into a computer, finding that my record is clean and posting the certificate out to me. How could that take 3-4 weeks?

I'd like to have it quicker because the sooner I have it the sooner I can apply for my work visa. Anyone know of any way I could get it done quicker if I phoned them up?

I request these on a weekly basis in work, and they take up to 6 weeks, but I've had them back in 2 days too. Usually its 4-6 weeks though.

Mine took about 2 months but some of that would have been to post it over here.

As to why it takes so long? Typical Irish beurocratic inefficiency I would imagine.

Thanks for the answers folks! Fingers crossed that it doesn't take quite that long.
