Yes, definatly one of the best movies of last year, if not one of the best of the decade, better than the sub-stanard book. And Clive Owens preformance is nothing short of sensational.

I enjoyed it a lot... but it seems to be a film that a good few people hate... the thread that came about at it's cinema release got a bit heated if I recall.

I still think it's funny that Papa Lazarou's wife shows up towards the end of the film.

It really is a fascinating film. I have to watch it again soon: the first time I was truly stunned by the technical side of the film: the forest attack scene totally deserved it's scene of the year (as voted for by the boards population), while the
escape and final, lenghty action scene in the refugee camp
were both stunning and tense. Perhaps if one wasn't too interested in the way it was filmed, the story may not have been that exciting (although I think it presents one of the more realistc Orwellian, dystopian futures committed to the screen) . But it certainly in the top five of 2006.

I reall really enjoyed it, one of the best of 2006 anyway, but I knew a good few people who didnt think much of it, different strokes I guess.

Didn't think much of it at all. That said tho there was one drawn out scene done in the car interior that I was very excellent technically.

I really liked it. Intense stuff throughout. And it has some of the best war scenes I've ever seen in a movie, even better that Saving Private Ryan!

Yeah Cuaron is one of my fave directors by far. This film is pure genius, probably the best post-apocalyptic drama film for years.

I really enjoyed this when I saw it in the cinema, I loved the long one-shot scenes. Worth another watch on dvd some day

my favourite bit in the movie was the scene towards the end - so many components in the scene, went on for so long and was all done in a single take - remarkable filming.

I didn't go to the cinema to watch it as when I heard the storyline I though "meh". Went into HMV and got it on the cheap and really regretted not going to the flicks to catch it. Very impressive film, loved the scene when he's running through the ruins of the camp looking for the mother and child, kind of Saving Private Ryan'ish.

    Thought it was awful.

I though the actress who played the pregnant girl was terrible.

I preferred the book. If I hadn't of read the book beforehand I probably would've enjoyed the film more. While the ambush scene in the film was technically good (one long take etc.), it didn't live up to the way I pictured it when reading the book. There's something about dystopian future and hyper-violence that go together, and the ambush was missing the hyper the book had.

I had a look for the book but couldn't find it, is it under the same name?

    Fantastic film.

    Very dissapointing film.

    Very dissapointing film.

    Why?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,017 ✭✭✭*Tripper*

I actually found this quite dissapointing aswell. I really wanted to see it when it was in the cinema, the trailers looked fantastic!

I saw it awhile ago on sky movies, and did not think it really lived up to its potential.

It could have had alot going for it but I felt the story line was weak in alot of places and found the ending a bit of an anti-climax.

Can't pick any bits that I particularly liked or disliked as it didn't really stick in my mind!

Way too much of the movies hype was based on the dystopian element of the story, compared to the actual plot which focused more on getting the pregnant girl to the human project, the characters they meet along the way and small problems along the way.

I think it would have been far more interesting to see how the world fell into the state it was in and see how people are coping with it.

Unfortunatly for me, this seems to be the trend for dystopian plots these days. Mar shampla, 28 Days Later and upcoming I Am Legend movie.

Actually I'm on an american av forum and when asked what their worst HD-DVD purchase was, a lot of them picked COM, as they thought the movie was crap, I couldn't understand that as I thought it was one of the movies of the year, I thought it might be that the americans just didn't get it, but reading hear looks like there are a good few boards members who don't like it either. Oh well maybe their all Rush Hour 3 fans :)

    Yes, by P D James.
    11NH664J6TL._SL110_.jpgAmazon Linky!

Read it as a kid when it first came out, and I remember enjoying it at the time. Haven't seen the film yet (hence my wondering what people here thought of it).

That I thought it might be us Europeans would get the movie more then our american cousins, but I see that a lot of people over here don't get it either!

    Ditto.

See you're just being silly and the '!' at the end proves it.

    What's tp 'get'?
Is there some sort of underlying point? A poignant life lesson to be learned or did you have some sort of epiphany during the film?
Seriously, those if us who didn't 'get' it...what is it that we didn't 'get'?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,783 ✭✭✭✭Snake Plisken

You didn't "get" a decent well made intelligent movie, COM gave some idea of what happened through the TV news reports etc, but hey dingdong, if you want to see the whole shooting gallery why dont you stick independance day on before you watch COM and then you can pretend thats what happened before the events of COM or 28 days later :)

    Snake ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,673 ✭✭✭✭senordingdong

We saw pictures of cities being nuked on the news reports...with no explanation as to why or what happened. Without this back story it's difficult to feel the gravity of the situation.
Considering the man on a mission plot that they followed, and awful lot of what happened in the movie could have been omitted.
You didn't "get" a decent well made intelligent movie
As for this, well I don't even need to think up a retort for that.

Well I suppose we all have our opinions and that is what makes boards great, could I just ask you Senor what you consider to be your top 5 movies in the last say since the beginning of 2006?

    Snake ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,673 ✭✭✭✭senordingdong

    Since 2006? I could not.
I watch alot of movies and their release dates aren't something I give great attention to. If you wanted to know my top 5 films of all time I'd happily oblige.

Anyway, I've thought it over and I am now able to put into words, my feelings about COM. It feels like the writers/director became horribly torn between making a dystopian movie, and a drama. By the end of which, neither element got the attention and focus it deserved, the end result being that the whole film suffered and left myself (along with many others) feeling that the whoel movie just plodded along without any proper direction.

Sure it was entertaining and I enjoyed watching it, but when I saw the praise it was getting, I stopped to think about it and that is how I feel.

I saw this movie the day before yesterday and I have to say I thought it was a very good indeed. I'm not one to notice much about how films are made, but even I could see that the directer was very good indeed. I really liked the section where he is trying to get into the building that the tank is shooting at , that was filmed extreamely well.

I too thought the end was extreamely anticlimatic too.
