we had lightening and thunder yesterday evening. And now my pc won't boot - there is an led light on the mother board, but it won't power up.

It was on a surge protecting (?) extension lead, along with TV (fine), external hdd (fine), various peripherals (not checked yet) and dvd system - not fine, plays dvds, but the surround sound is gone.

I've tried the pc with an alternative powercord, but nada.

what do i do next? or is it kaputt? PC is only 6 months old - dell dimension e520.

Not so pushed about the dvd system, but if anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate it.

And let this be an opportunity for everyone to back up their important documents and photos. I had backed up all my photos last weds, so even if the pc is fried, the only things I've lost are some movie files.

If you had a modem connected then that's probably where it came in. Remove it and try a reboot. Then likewise for other peripherials and then other cards. If you are very lucky it might just be a card.

It could be the PSU too, swap it with a borrowed one.
