Lifespan of Paslode Gas cylinders for Nail Guns

I have been offered a few boxes of nails for the Paslode gun c/w gas cylinders which are all well out of date 2005.

The seller, as he would, says there is no problem with the gas.
    [Gas is Gas !]

A tradesman I know, whom I respect, says I will need to buy new gas, as it goes 'off'

Just wondering how it 'goes off' and how it manifests itself: does it not work or knacker the nail gun or what?

    Can I still sniff it ? ;)
