Farmers who specialise in organic food are getting a boost in funding from the Government.

Annual grants of up to €25,000 could be awarded in the new scheme.

The move is aimed at reducing our dependence on imported organic products.

Horticulture Minister Trevor Sargent hopes the scheme will encourage regular farmers to switch over.

So Trevor is going to save Irish Farming then

In fairness most of the Organic meat on offer is Irish.
The same cannot be said for the vegetable industry here, many of the organic veges will have come from other countries outside the EU and have travelled a long way to get here.
It is easy to knock the minister for starting such a scheme and doubtless it may not be perfect but better the man tries to help than leave the many vegetable farmers to their own devices.
Brazilian beef is hot stuff in the media at the moment but beef farmers are not the only ones suffering from imported product.
Fishermen can catch Albacore tuna here but they have to compete with South African imports that are a fraction of the price €1.80 landed vs €5.00 for Irish caught fish.
What other suggestions can you make regarding the establishment of an organic farm sector?
In know that Glenisk have long been producers of organic milk but have recently stepped up another level with the launch of litre cartons of milk, this is encouraging and I personally welcome the introduction of "mainstreaming" organic products, which aren't just for hippies and sandal wearers. :)
