Dave Fanning is being dropped from drive time. His new show will be from 7-8pm, which is the same time as his drive time show but will now be called the Dave Fanning Show. This, according to RTE paymasters, will increase his listnership.
I'm intrigued. Can changing the name of a show really make it more attractive to the listner? Is it me who's deluded?

Have to say I actually listen to Fanning regularly and I quite like his show, apart from his rambling interviews where he tries to impress his guests with his knowledge of..eh..them.

Not too surprising, as in recent months, it didn't appear to be connected to the Drivetime strand. For instance, the generic news sting Radio 1 uses is now heard again at the 7pm bulletin, where it wasn't when Drivetime started.

And anything that disassociates Dave from Des Cahill has to be a good thing.... for Dave.

I think this is a good move. Hopefully this will help strengthen the Drivetime brand and Dave Fanning. I always thought using the name Drivetime was confusing. Previously with 5-7 Live, you knew it was News and Sport but having Dave Fanning included in the same bracket as News just didn't seem right...

With regard to listeners, I feel the name "Dave Fanning" is much stronger than "Drivetime", and clearly states what the show is about.

I you want to listen to Fanning you will listen, no matter what the show is called. I think it's typical of RTE, they seem to think their listnership are gombeens. They even went as far over the last two weeks when Fanning was on hols to have a fanning pretender host his show. Someone by the name of Cormac batter or batten. This guy tries to sound exactly like Fanning, even down to the mumblings.Sickening to listen to.Almost as bad as listening to Derek Davies.

I think you mean Cormac Battle. http://www.rte.ie/2fm/cormacbattle/ http://www.rte.ie/radio1/drivetimewithdave/ he's been with 2fm for a while now.

My point on the names, was that I felt there was need for separation between Drivetime and Fanning. Dave Fanning is a strong brand, and everyone knows what his show is about. Calling it Drivetime just confuses things when the previous 2 hours of Drivetime has been news and sport.

I have to say I don't agree. Fanning talks very fast and can make cynical points about things he likes but at least he has an opinion, apart from all the brainless twits on 2fm/Radio 1. He allows interviewees time to respond, although I know he often asks long-winded questions. He used to do the movie show (or whatever it was called on RTE) and it was really good for the interviews he did.

i like the show but it sometimes it seems like all he does is play old interviews he did years ago

that's cos, sadly, a lot of old interviews are better than newer ones. back in the day, you got x minutes with an artist and there were sod all topics that were 'off limits'.

Nowadays, the PR girl will have you briefed that if you mention 'the drugs, the ex wives, the cheating, the difficult second album that only sold in Bolivia, the child porn or the artists sons ill advised involvement in the pro-hunting movement' then the interview will be over, so by default recent interviews by most acts tend to be a lot 'safer' and with less bite.

Maybe I'm just being old and cynical, but I think a lot of people caught on to DF's 'shillism' on Radio 2. John Peel he most certainly ain't.

The decision to shoe-horn him into the old 5-7 live slot to me smacked of typical RTE gombeenism.

He's almost back to his original 8 to 10pm slot he had for years on 2fm.

Fanning is/was a music DJ - anytime I have heard him recently he sounds completely uninterested in what topic he's supposed to cover.

Just let him back to the demos and music interviews and get someone suitable for the job.

RTE are ****e in the extreme these days. The only things worth listening to are the podcasts, when being selective.

I remember Fanning on "Comin'atcha" Radio 2 when it started in 1979 and if nothing esle he's been consistant over the years ie being a sort of Ireland's John Peel and breaking new bands/music....until they moved him to Radio 1 which just doesn't suit him at all and I would even go so far as to say that his only music show, which is on a Friday, sounds pre-recorded most of the time!
