Buy a laptop now or wait till Christmas?

    Hello,
I'm thinking of buying a laptop so I can finally use my D-Link 524. But the thing is I'm wondering weather I should buy one now or wait till Christmas. For example will there be special offers on at Christmas from Dell or other stores that will be better than whats on offer now.

Also is it worth getting it with Vista or will it be better to get it near Christmas so it'll be closer to a service pack(I,ve heard Vista is still very buggy).

One more question, will the prices of the hardware be cheaper at Christmas?

    Thank You! :)

The price of computer hardware in general always drops, or you get a better spec laptop for the same money, if you wait 3-5 months you'll probably get better spec for your money, but you could wait indefinitely because once you buy, a month or two later if not sooner, there will be better deal

You'll probably get one or two good deals around christmas time, but it mightn't be the type of laptop you want. I'd say just start looking at laptops, decide what you want, and learn to spot whats good value and whats not, and then when your ready or a good deal comes up you can consider it

I'd recommend going with vista at this stage, unless theres particular software that you need that won't run under vista. XP's fine but, vista is as good, looks better and is the direction things are going

if you need now, buy now, if you don't then don't.

don't always hold off as there is ALWAYS something around the corner.

Fantastic deals at the moment on the Vostros laptops....hard to imagine them getting any better, already several hundred cheaper then most equivilent models of all other brands

If you think about it, the Christmas season is where most retail companies make their money, be they computers, or clothes, or food, or whatever.

So they don't tend to drop their prices as there is already enough demand.

Bottom line with technology, there is alwyas something better around the corner, no point in waiting.

Dell should have the annual back-to-school offers shortly. Worth keeping on eye on their offers.

u can make one up :P
its not like you have to provide a business registration number.

Crap do you really need to have a small business to buy one of the Vostros? I'd rather not make one up, if I had it would be the crapest sounding small business in the world. "Gorilla Technologies!"

I've had a look at the Vostro 1000 and its cheaper than an Inspiron 6400 after I,ve configured it.

I dont think thats true. The hardware inside is identical depending on configuration of course. The only real difference is the chassis colour and Business Support.

Well I hardly meant that they use different internal parts. What I meant was for the same price, you can get a way better Vostros.

What everyone else said.. if you need it..by it. There will always be better coming along regardless when you buy. My company told me to get what ever in terms of a lap top..so I waited..waited...waited... kept checking specs etc. Got me a fine assed Sony Vaio SZ2 with the Centrino duo. Couple of weeks later the bloody Core 2 Duo came out :(

Dell are doing great deals on the Vistro. I have one ordered for 800 that has two gig of ram. Core 2 Duo and a GFX card capable of playing F.E.A.R. The code is N015003

Ouch indeed! Such is life though.

How much is that 1501 costing you if you don't mind me asking?

The Vostro 1500 is seriously good value.

    Go through Dell
enter the code 305 then N0815003 in the E value boxes...
    Base
    	Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7100 Processor (1.8GHz,800MHz,2MB L2 cache)	edit
    Microsoft Operating System
Genuine Windows Vista™ Business - English	edit
    Enhanced Service Packs
Base Warranty - 1 Year Business Hardware Support	edit
    LCD
    	15.4" Wide Screen WXGA (1280 x 800) Display with TrueLife™	edit
    Colour Choice
Matte Jet Black with 2.0 mega pixel camera	edit
    Memory
    	2048MB 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM (2x1024)	edit
    Hard Drive
160GB (5400RPM) SATA Hard Drive	edit
    Video Card
    	256 MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8600M GT	edit
    Optical Devices
Fixed Internal 8X DVD+/-RW Drive	edit
    Primary Battery
    	Primary 6-cell Lithium-Ion Battery (56 WHr)

The above being twaeked by a Dell person is costing me 800...but I am waiting till they see if they can stick on XP Pro instead of Vista. I left the lower battery because in will be plugged in all the time. Me sony SZ2 is the mobile lappie :)

Here is a review of the GFX by the way..

Crap, I should have got the Vostro but did you have to make up a business name or anything? I got the 1501 because it was for Home users.

nah you don't need a business name and regardless they have to deliver to the credit cards main address unless you have set up another one with the bank. It is not like you are buying it VAT free etc.

You can just cancel or return yours and re order. I have returned one once with no issues. Told them it was a present and that she had got herself one in the meantime :)
