Do you want one with an external power supply or not? Can be a bother carrying around one sometimes.

Well external hard drives are USB so ye it is pretty much a case of plugging it in. Look into the specs though if you're big on speed and performance.
Saw this today: nice enough I thought -

Pretty much the top brand and good price. I got a HD earlier in the year and I don't think 500gb was anywhere near that cheap

Its basically for just dumping recording projects onto and probably pictures.. so I won't really be carrying it around... well I hope not anyway... just want to make sure its compatible with my laptop...

cheers for the advice and link...

2.5 inch and 3.5 inch are hard drive sizes , IDE and SATA are two different interfaces. They are just hard drives for installing into a pc , i.e , opening up the case and installing internally.

Its an external one you want , so you dont have to worry about that ! dont get them mixed up now , make sure its an External one you buy !

Good deal for 500GB right now otherwise I would go with the Western Digital MyBook ones.

^ It's a Maxtor though. Every HD I've had that failed was a Maxtor...

The firewire and USB model has an exta ring around the power button which indicates disk usage. Hardly essential but useful.
