Wizard is the one I hear most. Or "whizz". What? Wizard? GTFO!

    i think its great...

I like to think that I am a bit of one, I pick up a lot of computer related knowledge and technology fairly quickly:
For example i know, windows(95,98,me,2000,xp,server 2003, vista and working on 2008)
Web(asp, asp.net, css, html, javescript, dhtml)
Server Applications(Exchange(5.0,5.5,2000,2003,2007), oracle, sql server, apache, MOM, WSUS)
Security Apps (Cisco Firewall/VPN app, symantec firewall/vpn, checkpoint firewall vpn, symantec-avg-mcafee Security sweets)
Well versed in windows reggistry which is always handy for removing unwanted applications manually, ie viruses, spyware.
    Disaster Recovery Specialist. etc etc

    the list goes on.
so i think its entertaining when i get called the IT guru, or my new personal favourite it...
    "My personal computer monkey"!

Got called that the other day and laughed my arse off!

can't stand any title with "IT" in it tbh, it's way to ambiguous. You can refer to me as either sysadmin or root, that is all

Yeah, "IT" is a rather broad term. To most people, IT = anything to do with computers. So they could be categorising someone who does, say, eircom.net phone monkey support the same as a software developer or sysadmin etc.

The classic one I get is "He's a computer programmer"
    *shudders*

Yup. So if somethnig goes wrong with your neighbour's computer, parents would offer your services because they know you do IT, not realising that you're focused in one area of IT (primarily) and don't know everything about it, nor can ya. As such, it's a silly name! IT God is preferable.

A Computer! I wish it was just computers. If the neighbours radio or TV breaks I get a call. "Sure you work with electrics, surely you can fix a radio" Eh, no.

I've always found that if you know more than the other guy then you're a computer genius, whiz or words to that effect. If you can build a computer, or even if you know the difference between memory and a hard disk, then you're some sort of demigod.
    I still think " z0/\/\G |-|3'5 /-\ l337 |-|4><012" is far worse
It makes me sad that I can read most of that. What's the 012 at the end though, that's bugging me.

Been working as a system engineer for quite a time now and been called a lot over the years from BOFH to things that I cant print here.

never though has someone refered to myself or work as GURU

though wiz and wizard has popped up over the years.

Now I dont recal ever waking up in a robe with a long beard farting fireballs out my rear end and walking with the aid of a staff that also shoots something magical! it does however and always has made me CRINGE!

usually because what i've done is not actually that intellegent or requires a degree in computing, just some patience and common sense.

    :D

and if its a boss you've done it for, lie, make up some sort of insanly mad problem to make yourself sound smart, or to test their limits of how dumb they are! :D
