Wii Virgin - advice???

    Okay,

Finally got a Wii today, after months of saving for a PS3. A combination of factors including unexpected bills and the PS3 having absolutely CRAP games forced me to do this, and i've never been happier. It's fcukin DEADLY!!!

Got Wii sports, Far Cry Vengeance and Mario Strikers Charge/whatever. Haven't played FCV yet, but never mind. Was playing for 3 hours and then spent another hour setting up the Wi-Fi and performing updates etc. and all is well.

What i wanna know is, now that you have your Wii for x number of months, if you were in my position again, what would you do differently / not at all?

My plan for the moment is:

    1. Get another wiimote + nunchuck combo for €45 + €25 in Argos respectively or would it be cheaper to get Wii play [including a free wiimote] and a nunchuck? Would i get it cheaper anywhere else? Is Wii play any use?

    2. Get a docking station for the wiimotes, also in argos for €30. The reason for this is that I presume the batteries will ed up costing €30 in about a month anyway, so might as well splash out now.

    3. Get a few Wii points cards for the V-console games. Do i then need a classic controller too? (€25 in argos) Or will the wiimote work?. Am i right in saying the wii points translate directly into euro's....i.e......€20 = 2000 points? From what i can see the games cost between 600 and 1200 points. Pretty decent value for some of the games on show......Mario Kart, DK country, SSF2T, Kid Chameleon etc.

This is all adding up fairly sharpish.....(€165 if i got 4000 points) ...... is there anywhere cheaper? Even buying online?

As i said earlier, is there anything you wished you'd done at an earlier stage or do i have things covered? I'm gonna spread the cost of the above over the next 4 weeks / 2 pay packets.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

u may aswell get Wii Play.

also, if ur gettin Wii Points, get the software updates. The Wii Browser costs 500! Get that! it rocks! also, ya may aswell get the free Everybody Votes channell.

Another thing u should get is a Gamecube controller. Theres a lot of games out there for the gamecube for less than a tenner.

Now go to the Wii Codes and Mario striker stickys and put ur numbers up there, that way, you'll get all cool Mii's and be able to play fellow boardsies in Mario striker.

You are right about the batteries - I got a charger on eBay for less than 20 including delvery - does both the wiimotes and has matching blue light.

I got Wii play for the extra conroller but rarely use the game.

If you are near an xtra vision - they do the controllers quite cheap - i saw the classic there for €20.

You need to get Resident Evil 4 Wii now, and I'm not taking no for an answer :)

There are docking/charging stations in GAME for €25 at the minute, that include a battery pack (watch out for some of the other charging cradles need you to have your own rechargable batteries!)

Also the Wii points cards are €20 for 2000 in Smyths, and €25-30 in other places.

And like Koneko said, get RE4 Wii Edition... its a necessity!

Dont bother with Wii play, i played it once, its just a bunch of flash type games with the Wii controller.

Get Zelda Twilight Princess, fantastic game. Consider Trauma Centre out today. You bought yours at the right time, theres plenty good games coming out from now on.

I bought Wii Play and I think its quite good, especially in 2 player mode. The second controller is handy too. Have to get myself a 2nd nunchuk. And I'm also going to invest in the docking station.
Does anyone know if a wireless sensor bar is coming out soon?

Is there ever gonna be one? I don't see the real need TBH - it comes with quite a long lead...

    stephen p,
I think there's an unofficial one, made by Nyko.

The sensor bar cable is simpy a power cable and doesn't send any info to or from the Wii. All the info is sent via the wiimote (or so I have read, correct me if I'm wrong). There are some modders making thier bars wireless by attaching batteries to the sensor bar somehow. You could try this one, don't know how reliable it would be though.

26 minutes! Here is my review:

"Wii Play is a fun way for you and a friend to get acquainted with your remotes. An hour or two of joy for a tenner."

    26 words.

You can also just use two little bulbs, or LEDs or candles. Just put them under or on top of your TV, about six inches apart. It works!

I too am a Wii virgin, got the console last weekend, been having a great time with it. Resi 4 is amazing.

Yesterday I invested in some Gamecube games. I skipped the console when it came out a few years back in favor of the PS2 and XBox. I went off 'Tendo for a while but the DS bought back my faith in them. Anyways, Got 6 games and 2 controllers in GameStop for 27 euros. I think thats amazing tbh, the Cube gam,es go for as little as 2.50 each (4.99 for a game and then get one free). The controllers were 1.99 each (everything is 2nd hand of course).

I'll probably end up playing the Gamecube games more then the Wii :P Viewtiful Joe is amazing. I must find a list of the best Gamecube games and get em. Any recommendations? And do I need to get a Gamecube memory card to save games or is there another way?

Also, most of the virtual console games work with the Gamecube controller and some Wii games work with it too, so you might not need to buy a classic controller at all.

From what I've read that's correct. I was reading the ubuntu forum last night and there is a post there about a driver to get the wiimote working with linux (which sounds great). From the post it appears the the wiimote communicates to the wii via bluetooth. The sensor bar is just LED's so the wiimote can tell the movements using infrared.

I haven't tried it yet but plan to get a bluetooth dongle to try it on my pc next week.

Yup indeed, the IR sensor is actually in the Wiimote and calculates the co-ordinates from there and sends them back to the Wii. It's a system which has been around for years for things like target practice and shooting simulators etc. The sensor bar simply has 2 IR LEDs in each end that give the IR sources the sensor needs. Any heat source would work, though I'm sure candles mightn't be the steadiest ;)

No reason you couldn't run it with batteries, just never even considered it myself...

Wireless sensor @ play.com for €12.49. It needs 6 AA batteries though, so it might be wise to invest in rechargeables.
