Laptop + GPS

I am not sure if I should talk about this here in GPS - I might move it over to laptops if you think it is off topic.

Anyway, I have very, very, very limited resources so I was thinking about trying to get GPS on my laptop?
I could power it from the cigarette lighter in the car and have the software 'speak' the directions to me?
    Although, I need a receiver, don't I?

Do you think it is possible?

Also, I am thinking the software is nearly as expensive as a GPS system, so maybe it is half a dozen of one and six of another.
BTW, I only need it for traveling in the UK.
