Cheapest Ive seen in a retailer is Maplins , and they charge 25 euro.

The sony one will cost you 50 or so from any game store , but theres nothing special about it , get the cheapest one you can.

Dont be conned by these Gold Monster cables for ridiculous money , its an all digital connection , the cheapest will do , there is no difference in quality.

Its a HDMI cable were talking about right ? Theres no such thing as a 1080p or 1080i cable , resolution is nothing to do with the cable , thats determined by your TV , the playstation checks it and sets its output accordingly !

Either some clueless eigit in Dixons was trying to work out why theres a price difference in his own head , or he was trying to rip you off , as I said , there are no grades of quality with a digital cable , get the cheapest !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 624 ✭✭✭lazygit

maybe your right dude, but i can assure you there was 2 HDMI cables on the shelf in Dixons

one was €15 euro, the box clearly stated 1080i max
one was €45 euro, the box clearly stated 1080p max

my TV only supports upto 1080i.. so thats the one i bought... either way OP shop around, you will find huge difference in prices, i believe the orignal Soly HDMI cable was abour €70!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,174 ✭✭✭mathias

Your right there are huge differences in prices and they are all a rip off , it will not make one iota of difference to the final picture or sound whether you get the 20 euro or pay the extortionate 140 euro for the monster cable.
one was €15 euro, the box clearly stated 1080i max
one was €45 euro, the box clearly stated 1080p max

I believe you , but i guarantee you its BS of the highest order and a rip off.

HERE!! he's OBVIOUSLY talkin about HDMI 1.2 and HDMI 1.3!
And dont be forgettin the sound lads!! HDMI is all bout the sound as much as picture.

This thread is about cables , not interfaces , there is no such thing as a HDMI 1.2/1.3 cable , there is just HDMI cable , thats it.

Interfaces are a completely different topic.

The computer place on oconnell bridge, max power or something similar do them for €15. Thats the cheapest Ive seen in a bricks n mortar shop in Dublin.

The difference is the 1080p cable is rated for a higher bandwith. The €15 probably would work for 1080p but there is greater chance of getting artifacts/"sparkles" in the picture due to interference. This is especially true if the cable is long-ish. I've witnessed it myself on the parents 1080p when they got a cheapo 5m cable and there was random sparkles appearing near the top of the picture. A 2m cable was ok.

I have two, €15 3m hdmi cables connected to my tv. One is upscaling dvd player, other is ps3.

Both cables got in Power City, non goldplated, look perfect.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,365 ✭✭✭ongarite

We have already had this arguement already but unless you are running a HDMI cable over long distances (unlikely unless you keep your ps3 in another room), any cheap HDMI cable will be perfect.
I got 2 2M cables in Pete's on Dame St for €14 each.

Why use old hadware for new technology??
There is a difference! It sometimes says it on the box! Same cables will only transmit up to 1080i!

mathias, I cant find your post on the testing you did for HDMI cables, taking the example of a 5v variance on the signal. But there's some serious pwning to be had if you can drag that up.

I have to say, after reading mathias' excellent exposé on the difference between different "quality" HDMI cables, it prompted me to go out and buy the cheapest one possible. I got the bog-standard one from HMV, think it cost me about 14.99 and its fine.

The upshot of the post was that digital signals over distances of less than 20m are transmitted perfectly, and interference doesnt affect it, as its a digital signal, ie. a 1 or 0 is passed.

    mathias, floor is yours.

Was in Powercity today and seen theire hdmi cables there for 14.95!
They're 3 meters long, so would be handy if your tele was high up on a wall and your home entertainment system was on the floor. just so there's a bit of slack on the end of the cable.
Average joe shouldn't need more than 3 meters. . .

Saw one here in the UK in Lidl (old stock) going for £4.99. Dunno what p or i thing it was.

    Lidl. . . . Brand of Quality!!

Dont bother with the like of retail outlets charging 235 euro for a 'Monster' cable.
Although moster make good cables Digital transmission isnt really open to the same interference as analogue leads were classically used to.
Digital signal either gets to its reciever or it doesnt and theres normally correction there to resend etc.

However having purchased a new telly a few weeks back I now needed a good lead for the PS3.

Atlona 1M Flat cable. I got mine from Linexpo great service.
    http://cgi.ebay.com/1M-3FT-ATLONA-FLAT-HDMI-CABLE-1-3-HDMI-RATE-WHITE-COLOR_W0QQitemZ350027382695QQihZ022QQcategoryZ149974QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

The cable is HDMI 1.3 verified and has a transmission speed up to 10Gbps thats double the norm so it is a very high quality and technically capable cable. Especially if your running 1080P video from e.g. PS3

    Thumbs up from me!!
    Nick

Hate to burst bubbles but its not , 10.2 is the max throughput for any HDMI cable , not just that one .... its just price gouging !

Ive tested them at work , and at 1M any and all HDMI cables are equal ! Argos do one every bit as good for 7 euros.

1080p with HD sound using 1.3 equipment only uses half the possible bandwidth , so that " HDMI 1.3 , 1080p rated " blurb is just rubbish , they can all do that!

Looking to pick one up 2mro as I just bought a ps3, my Samsung LE40M87BD TV supports 1080p on my xbox360 over component. Not sure about the ps3 over component, looking to get a HDMI for it anyway.

Is there anything to look out for when buying one? F.e i saw a standard one in GAME that I was just gona buy for around 20euro.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,726 ✭✭✭✭noodler

Mathias is the only making any sense. I know nothing about this on a technical level. But he is the only one who has either tested them or has some argument to back it up.

    Is a Scart a Scart?

I don't think he had any bubble to burst. He wasn't advocating a €50 HDMI cable, he was merely telling us he had faith in his ultra cheapo cable from eBay.

Mathias I know you mean well but you come across sometimes with an air of arrogance in relation to HDMI cables, this being a good example:
Hate to burst bubbles but its not
Why couldn't you have just stated the facts clean and simple. I apologise as I may have taken you up wrong but starting your post with the above I just see it as a little arrogant.

If your still looking for the hdmi cable i picked one up in zavii in the square yesterday for 5 euro. Works fine on my ps3 and dvd upscaler no loss of quality on my samsung 40" and i payed for a good quality one about a year ago.

To honest I think Mathias has simply set people straight. The only people that shoudl be offended are those you spent 50e+ on a cable.

Fair enough. I just got the impression that perhaps he's fed up and frustrated at having to put the arguement across repeatedly.

I don't think he had any bubble to burst.

This is what I was referring too ...
has a transmission speed up to 10Gbps thats double the norm

Which is not correct , all HDMI cables have a normal bandwidth of 10.2Gbps , and regardless of what claims any salesman will tell you that is true for all HDMI cables.

You will see cables marked up as HDMI 1.3 , 1080p as opposed to 1080i , etc etc etc , all of this is simply not true and is whats commonly called packing the deal or price gouging , myself I just call a spade a spade and call it fraud , as that is what it is.

HDMI cables can be category 1 or category 2 , thats it , and all that means is that one engineering sample from any particular maker was tested using either category 1 or category 2 specs and the rest of the cables were made the same way.
It would be a mistake to think that the cable you bought was ever tested , it is most likely that it wasnt.

From experience I know that any cable 10 meters or less that is mechanically sound will pass either test.

So , dont fall for the salesmans "untruths" , get the cheapest one you can , it will work as well as any other.
Margins are tight on Flat panel TV's at the moment , and most shops will try to make extra money on accessories , the cable is the number 1 target for this and as a result most shops carry the likes of monster / cord / Kimber cables at ridiculous prices ... I have seen 1m cables priced at 120 euros , an outrageous rip-off , and no matter what these guys say or what it says on the pack from the cable company , there will be no performance difference and there is no justification for that price.

Rightyo so, I guess I just took your post up wrong, my apologies.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 222 ✭✭penguinpoppers

Ok, just buy the cheapest damn cable you can find. If you want you can ''splash out'' and get a metre long goldplated one for €5 from ebay.
To be honest it doesnt really matter what type you get

As has been said. A cheaper cable will do the same job. Read the reviews for this cable.
