I was playing a round of golf a few days ago and on one hole I landed on the green. My playing partner played next and his ball landed on mine and knocked me off the green. We played on from where the two balls came to rest. Was this the correct thing to do or is there a rule for this situation?

You replace the ball that had been stationary. The offending ball which hit the stationary one is played as it lies- no penalty.

Only if your playing partner is on the green and putts his/her ball into yours, you can still then replace it but your partner gets a penalty.

You would have been entitled to place your ball back as close as possible to where i was originally. Your mate would just have played it where it lies. Don't think theres a penalty for not moving it back, other than perhaps playing your nxt shot from a worse spot.

Oh right thanks Ill remember that next time.

This happened to me a couple of weeks ago, ball was replaced to roughly where it was.

Does the ball have to be replaced though, say if it was knocked nearer to the hole?

mmm, I think if it (the stationary ball) is knocked into the hole it might stand, not sure though.

Otherwise it must be repaced as close as possible to the original spot.

    Another Rule:

Yellow and Red water hazards - can someone explain exactly the difference please?

For example, Par 3 8th hole @ Killeen. All over water (yellow)... If the ball carries the water, pitches in the bank and rolls back into the hazard - the ball must be played OVER the hazard again, right? You keep the point of entry between you and the hole or you have the choice of replaying the shot (ie 3 off the tee), is this correct?

    thanks people..

PS - I think the Rules Thread would be a great sticky.

Water hazard and lateral water hazard.

    WATER HAZARDS
Check the Local Rules on the score card to establish whether the
sea, lake, river, ditch, etc. is a ‘water hazard’ or a ‘lateral water
    hazard’.
Ball in water hazard (yellow stakes and/or lines) – play the ball as
it lies or, under penalty of one stroke,
    • play again from where you hit the ball into the hazard, or
    • drop any distance behind the water hazard keeping a straight line
between the hole, the point where the ball last crossed the margin
of the water hazard and the spot on which the ball is dropped.
Ball in lateral water hazard (red stakes and/or lines) – in addition to
the options for a ball in a water hazard (see above), under penalty
of one stroke, you may drop within two club-lengths of, and not
    nearer the hole than,
    • the point where the ball last crossed the margin of the hazard, or
    • a point on the opposite side of the hazard equidistant from the hole.

    WATER HAZARDS

    • the point where the ball last crossed the margin of the hazard, or
a point on the opposite side of the hazard equidistant from the hole.

So, in theory, if the water hazard at this par3 was a RED or LATERAL hazard - you could drop on the far side of the water (ie, on the GREEN side, not having to play over the water again) not neared the hole? Is this a case where you can drop three times and then place if the ball will not remain stationary?

Rule 18-5..your ball MUST be replaced. So if you saw it move, i think you would be penalised for playing it from the wrong position.

How do you make it a sticky

Only mods can sticky things. They have special buttons they can press.

Another quick rule question lads... hardly important but just popped into my head yesterday while I was playing...

You know sometimes when you take your wedge and putter out from around the green to save yourself going back to your bag in between the 'up' and 'down'?

Well, suppose you chipped your chip shot stiff, as in 6inches away. And, perhaps lazily, tapped in the short putt without bothering (or forgetting) to take the headcover off your putter...

Any penalty?? Is it legal to make stroke with the cover still on your club? Just curious...

I think in that case, the club would be classified as being modified since commencing the round and you would be penalised.

    I'm open to correction.

had a quick look and here's what came up... (strokeplay)

4-2. Playing Characteristics Changed and Foreign Material
    • a. Playing Characteristics Changed
During a stipulated round, the playing characteristics of a club must not be purposely changed by adjustment or by any other means.

    • b. Foreign Material
Foreign material must not be applied to the club face for the purpose of influencing the movement of the ball.

PENALTY FOR BREACH OF Rule 4-1 or -2:
    Disqualification.

I can sticky it, but we already have a few and I tend to find stickying stuff makes people post in them less, I'd like to see the rules thread kept going by the users and then we could look at stickying it. Happy to listen to peoples opinions on it though, the stickies need a tidy up which is on my to do list..

yeh, leaving it as a normal thread would be great for now. Threads do seem to die once they get stickied.

Does anyone know the rule, when a ball goes into a second hole on the green thats not in play, what should you do if this happens?

Sprint to the green as fast as you can and move the pin to the 'other' hole before anyone notices, then mark down your eagle/birdie/par and be thankful that for ONCE the golfing Gods were on your side!! :D

I'm pretty sure you would just take the ball out and take relief at the nearest possible point. If an old hole is in your way you are entitled to a move i think too.
