Backup SD Cards on the go to External HDD?

Is it possible to backup SD cards from a Nikon (or any camera for that matter) to an external Hard drive without the need for a pc.
I am planning on travelling a fair bit without access to a pc and while I have a few SD cards, those raw pictures fill them up pretty quickly!
    I have seen this http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=333524&view=detailed
but I was wondering would it backup directly from a camera as both my Panasonic FZ8 and Nikon D40x have the mini usb connectors.
    Anyone got ideas?

There are quite a few on the market at the moment. It really depends on what size you want as the HDD/ features available and also what cards are able to be connected/inserted which will determine the cost.

    Epson

    Canon

Jobo - look for the Giga One & Vu pro versions

I have the HDD enclosure you linked to. It works quite well, just use the USB cable for your camera, as you would from camera to computer, and it'll copy over to the disk. It creates a new folder for each 'dump', so it does what it says on the tin. Its only USB speeds, so can be a bit slow compared to using say a card reader in the express card slot of a laptop. The kit comes with a case, cables and a battery box (4 AAs) to power the unit when its not connected to a PC etc.

You need to put your own 2.5" HD into the enclosure, and the photo dump function only works with a FAT 32 partition ... so if you want to use a large capacity disk you'll need to work around window's size restrictions for creating FAT32 partitions ... a linux live CD, e.g. Ubuntu, is the route I took to get a 120GB disk to work with it.

So yes, it will backup directly from the camera, but you lock up the camera while copying the photos over. There are other options which have a card reader built in, similar to what mike linked to above but without the photo viewing ability.

Thanks for the replies, been looking for something (cheapish) but not too bad.
    Saw this on ebay http://cgi.ebay.ie/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=130139543603&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=003
Thought it looks ok, any input?

I got one of these http://dpnow.com/1284.html

It has a memory card reader in the side and you need to buy a laptop hard drive to put in it but it runs on it own battery pack. Works well when in the middle of no-where.
