    Hi Folks,

Well, I have come to a decision that I am going to take up martial arts again after a long period of time and lately I have been looking into Eskrima/Kali as the avenue I am most interested in.

I was wondering if anyone could reccomend any of the clubs/schools in the South Dublin/City Centre area.

Further, can anyone (preferably someone who has experiencei nthe systems) tell me how heavy the strain is on the ankle joints? Its a weird question I know but I find that the North Eastern martial Arts I have tried (notably TKD and Wado-Ryu) have been very hard on them with an emphasis on positioning of the blades of the feet.

    Thanks in advance folks.

These guys are based in Donnybrook and Bray... only know of them indirectly though their association with Master's Temple.

I'd heard about this club but thanks for putting the link up I wanted to findout more.

There is a couple of clubs in city centre:
    Warriors Eskrima
    Wild Geese

Dave Joyce also runs Sayoc Kali & Atienza Kali training groups in Dublin, his club is based in Galway SEAMA Academy
but have regular meets in Dublin & Kilkenny. They have a Sayoc meet on 18th August....for more information contact him.

I train at Warriors Eskrima & I enjoy the training with them as it's a nice small friendly group.

From my experience I don't think it's hard on the ankles at all.

    Hope this helps.

You'll find the footwork in FMA much more free flowing than in karate and most TMA.

Drop in to a class and have a go.

    Best of luck

Alright lads, been interested in starting escrima for a while now.

Just wondering is wild geese a mixture of Escrima, Kenpo and other MA's?
The website says classes as Wed, Fri & Sun, 1830 - 2000,

Is it just FMA during these classes or is it a mix?

Also do wild geese and warriors teach different systems of Escrima or are they different.

P.S. Sorry if I am incorrectly addressing it as Escrima, I have seen a number of names for what seems to be fillipino martial arts.

I'm sure Dave (Edges) will be along to give you a run down on Wild Geese but the classes are all separate and individual with Doces Pares been the system of Eskrima practised but I don't know the exact class times. This is a very famous system of the Canete family.

Warriors Eskrima is a different system taught in Europe by Guro Krishna Godhania and his reps in Dublin the bold Scuttery1 and Dyna Shane O'Neill. This is GM Abner Pasa's system and he has shall we say a lot of real world experience:) I would suggest going along to both places and see which takes your fancy and then take it from there, they're both excellant and all of the lads are great guys.

As for the whole Eskrima (or Escrima), Arnis and Kali thing, please don't even go into it. Lets just say there are a lot of islands in the Phillippines and a lot of different dialects so different people say different things. Good luck with your training.

Cheers Dave, I think I'll take your advice and pop along to both and see which suits me better.

Just a question about the general training...I know it most likely differs but how is Escrima fitness wise? I always got the impression it would be less physically strenous than more sport-orientated MA's like Karate or TKD.

Would you describe the training as useful for maintaining a good level of fitness.

    Hi Mate,

Eskrima/Kali/Arnis, lets just say FMA to keep it simple eh?

Wild Geese MA is: Doce Pares Original as in GM Diony Canete's style, Guba Doce Pares as in GM Danny Guba (he's the man!!), Rapid Arnis and Parkers Kenpo.

Why the differences, honestly not much:
Rapid Arnis is simple to learn and will get you fighting very quickly
Danny Guba was a long time student of Cacoy Canete and prefers the Corto or close range fighting, plus he knows a think or two about stabbing and being stabbed
Doce Pares Original would be "graduate" level as it's a massive syllabus.

when we teach unarmed, it's heavilly influenced by FMA, Kenpo and others. We refer to our empty hand style simply as Kenpo because it's our biggest influence.

To be fair you'll learn it all over time, all eskrima is basically the same, the similarities outweigh the differences and with any eskrima (us, warriors, Dave Joyce) you'll find your skill level improves very rapidly as most of the training is pairwork and freeplay (live) training is encouraged.

Drop in and have a look, I believe if you join Warriors and Wild Geese you'll be able to train almost every day!!!

    All the Best
