    Hi all

I too am training for my first marathon in Dublin this yr. I'm up to 1hr 50 on my long runs and hopeto finish around the 4.10-4.20 mark.

anyway my main problem is that the nights of my long runs and steady 1 hour runs i find it really difficult getting to sleep. On my rest days I'm grand going to sleep.

I have 1 cup of coffee in the mornigns and thats it as far as caffeine is concerned. I do take energy gels with me on my long runs but would they really keep me awake if I'm running for that length of time?

    Your thoughts are greatly appreciated!ZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzz

When do you take your runs?
What time do the runs finish and when do you take your gels during the run (before, start, mid, end, after)?
What do you take to recover after your runs, ie liquids and food?

I used to have this problem when I trained late in the evening and came to the conclusion that its the adrenaline in your body i.e. your after been running around for that long your blood is really pumping try doing your run a bit earlier like directly after work it helped me. hope this helps

My long runs are on sunday mornings. I usually do it before 1 o clock.

as regards the gel i have been experimenting a little with the timing during the run itself. But i take 1 10-15 mins before I start anyway. I dont have 1 after the run either.

After I take a recovery drink of 25g of carbohydrate and protein with 500mls water (not pleasant but I do it). Iwll also eat a banana as I'm usually hungry by that point. then for my dinner I usually make sure its dominated by carbs ie spuds, pasta, and veg. I've cut back on the bickies and chocolate.

plenty of water too Could it be the recovery drink, as I only have this after the long runs?
