    Hi,
    I have been looking around at different posts for the last hour or so before opening this thread. There is a lot of helpful material but I cannot find specific answers to the questions below. I would appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction or better still answer them here.

    We are adding a c.70 sq.m extension to our terraced house. Planning has been granted and building "should" commence in the next month or so. The extension will be single storey with a 17degree single pitch roof. The high wall will reach about 4m.

    The existing oil heating system heats radiators upstairs and downstairs. A back boiler on a coal (open) fire over-rides the oil boiler once the pump is switched on. Given the increased area of the house (c.90 sq m at present) I imagine the back boiler will have to be de-commissioned. The plan is to avoid rads in the extension and fit ufh.


    1. How wise is it to have both rads and ufh ? At least 1 or 2 rads will remain active downstairs in the existing house. If different water temperatures are required for rads and ufh how can both be active simultaneously? I have read in some other posts about the necessity for a buffer tank. How does this work and would it be required?

    2. I read in a recent post that 120mm Xtratherm/Kingspan would be sufficient for the floor insulation below the pipes, Is it excessive (materials & money) to attempt more than this?

    3. Again, based on other posts I was thinking of 100mm Kingspan in the cavity wall with 50mm foam backed slabs on the internal walls (just those with an external front). 100mm Kingspan insulation between the rafters and foil backed slabs on the ceiling. Sound ok?

    I have a question also about wpb but I will head for the gardening & DIY with that one.
