is it known for big busnesses to carry out drug tests on possible employees?

I am currently on a student placement, thinking of applying for a permanent job here. when talking to one of the colleagues about my exploits over the long weekend he said to keep it down because they sometimes do drug tests on students looking to go further. I think he was just taking the proverbial píss.

That's quite common alright, I had one for my current job which is a summer placment. It was part of a medical.

I have come across it in the pharma and refinery industries in Ireland and abroad. It's common enough.

and is there a scale or is it a case of if you have any trace of illegal substance in your blood you are unemployable? because if this is the case anyone with alcohol or nicotine should be refused aswell tbh

Your most important work there is ILLEGAL.....also be careful what you/friends put on a bebo page or such, not uncommon to have a quick search of the web on a potential employee.



also these tests may become more common thanks to an irish company....


Irish company launches drug driving test kit

A major technology development by an Irish company is set to revolutionise the capacity of police to undertake road-side tests for “drug driving”

The vast majority of current drug tests are taken with a urine sample sent to a central laboratory – a process which is obviously not suitable for testing drivers at the side of the highway.

Biosensia, a Cork-headquartered technology company, is meeting the road side challenges by creating a portable, hand-held device that is simple and easy to use by non medically trained staff, giving a “yes/no” result in a matter of minutes from a small sample of a subject’s saliva taken on a swab.

It is expected that the first Biosensia technology- based kits will be manufactured early next year.

The Biosensia device is not however restricted to road-side use and can also address the detection of drug abuse in the workplace, an increasingly serious problem for employers internationally.

Biosensia has already shown its technology to the Medical Bureau of Road Safety in Ireland and members of the Association of Chief Police Officers in the UK where usability tests are scheduled for later this year.

Biosensia chief executive Dr Gabriel Crean said drug driving was a recognised issue, with an increasing number of governments looking to introduce roadside drug testing.

Biosensia (www.biosensia.com) develops and supply’s disposable diagnostic test chips for point-of-use analytical applications.

The company is funded by Atlantic Bridge Ventures, Street Capital and Enterprise Ireland and is headquartered in Cork, with product development teams based in Cork and Kildare, Lund, Sweden and Cranfield, UK.

it's crazy that such harmfull drugs are legal though. I am not going to bring this discussion farther as I know the admins would not appreciate a drug dispute.

Alcohol and nicotine are legal. Drugs aren't.

Yea, at the end of the day though you're not going to cause HR any recruitment problems by getting put in the slammer for having a drink and a cigarette, not to mention any PR problems by employing drug addicts.

I wasn't looking at the legal standpoint. I am just saying a person who smokes grass is no more dangerous than someone who drinks alcohol or smokes cigarettes

Could ya not just get some clean p1ss from a friend? Just keep it in case they do drug test ya? not exactly a pleasant idea, but i doubt they'll watch ya taking a leak? Get a friend to fill one of those small kid's cola (cadet is it?) bottles and keep it in work. When they ask you to fill 'er up, just say you just took a leak and you'll fill up the cup next time.

On the contrary, cannabis is a gateway drug (and anyone who disagrees with this is deluding themselves), and has been proven to lead to mental illness such as psychosis and depression. Not to mention the fact regular smokers turn into lazy, unmotivated bums.


But this is irrelevent because the drug test employers are permitted to give only tests for illegal drugs because they don't want an employee getting arrested or giving them bad PR.

Well that is not true strictly speaking.

It is proven that there is a link, but it is just as plausible, given the results of these studies that people with underlying mental illnesses are more likely to use cannabis and not that cannabis actually causes the illnesses.

If you read the actual findings of the studies, you'll find that a lot of the results are inferred, i.e. that because more people that smoke weed have mental illnesses, therefore the weed must cause the illness, which is a misdiagnosis as no-one really knows the truth.

wow so can you explain to me how it is a ''gateway'' drug when 99.9% of people drink alcohol before they do any other experimenting with cannabis and the likes? surely the gateway drug would in fact be alcohol, no? legal or not.

as for the mental illnesses, again alcohol........ its not exactly a bowl of fruity goodness for your brain now is it.

While an unadulterated urine sample is the only 100% certain way to pass a drug test the small problem of keeping the said urine at body temperature arises. If you hand the tester a vile of ice cold urine they're going to get suspicious.

If you know you have a drug test coming up the best thing to do is just detox. If you're smoking a couple of times a week I'd give about a month. Drink plenty of cranberry juice and take a milk thistle supplement daily (available in Holland & Barrett and the likes, go for 2x recommended dose). Use mid-stream urine when giving the sample.This method isn't fool-proof of course.

I once did a drug test for a multinational company and was confident I'd pass as I hadn't smoked anything for about 6 weeks (I didn't do the above detox plan however). To my surprise I tested positive for THC. I said to the doctor "oh I live with a few students and they'd be smoking the old marijuana cigarettes". I had to argue with the guy pretty hard but he eventually passed me. I was very lucky on that occasion.

I was told the best thing to do is have a good few pints of Guinness and loads of juice before going in, that the yeast covers the THC. also I wouldn't be that frequent, a few times a month maybe but deffinitly not every week

I'd to do one in the U.S before starting employment.

One way is to store Urine in a small container and keep it refrigerated. When going to the test, keep it in your armpit to heat it to body temperature. This is important as they test the temp after you give it to them.

Another solution is to drink lots of Epsom salt with water
