Im looking for self defence classes in Stillorgan/sndyford/dundrum area. Preferably aikido as i done it for a year some time back and liked it. Got jumped this weekend, for doing absolutely nothing and would like to deal with the suituation a bit better than falling over in future should it arise again.

    fguihen,

I'm sorry to hear you were attacked at the weekend. Hopefully you aren't hurt seriously. A few points if I may? These are harsh enough comments, but understand I'm saying them to help you.

    1) Danger avoidance is a million times better than fighting skills. If someone else recounted the incident to you, how would you objectively see it? Maybe you took risks you shouldn't have (getting too drunk, taking a short cut home instead of a taxi, going out with the "wrong" crowd, chatting up someone's girlfriend). Again, I'm not trying to upset you, just that understanding this concept helps infinitely more than any fighting skills. There are **** heads out there that look for fights, I know.

    2) For any sort of practical martial arts, you need to spar and condition yourself. In Aikido there is no sparring so you don't get the adrenaline rush of a confrontation, nor do you learn what you can pull off against someone fighting back. With this in mind, I'd recommend you train in Boxing, Judo, MMA, or something similar. www.fiannagym.com are close to Dundrum, with myself www.spartanmma.com in Tallaght. www.iaba.com will direct you towards boxing clubs, www.judoireland.com will help you with Judo clubs.

If you really want Aikido, UCD have a club. I'm unsure of their policies concerning non students, however.

    Hope this helps,
    Colm
