right - i've always enjoyed messing about with cameras and have been told that I have a good eye for it.

However, I'd like to develop more skill in it, can anyone recommend any good books for a digital camera?

    Cheers,

I can also vouch for the fact that Rymus is a bit cheesed off right now ... but I'm sure no offence was meant ... the last 4 or 5 weeks have had a lot of "what camera should I buy threads" (including one from me about lenses so I'm as guilty as anyone) ... so I guess people are getting a bit cheesed off with it ... not that there is any problem with it ... but maybe it needs its own Sub-Forum ...

and as for Understanding Exposure ... I've seen many threads recommending that over the past few weeks too ... I'll add my usual response (since I'm not as into this book as others) - I'd recommend Langfords series of books -

    Basic Photography
    Advanced Photography
    Starting Photography

    linky to one here -

The regulars bunch here are a welcoming lot and not at all elitest ... it just your thread comes after a few rather dull weeks in the forum ... too many gear posts and not enough of other stuff ... come along to one of our group meets any time and you will be made very welcome and can get all the free advice in the world ...

... we may even let you play with some gear to get an idea for yourself ...

Well, good books with photographs will tell you also a lot, if you are able to look at the pictures and think why are you attracted by them. Is it composition, are that those colours, is it the simplicity, are that the black and white tones?
But start with some basic books and after reading few basic rules you'll start seeing those rules in good pictures. And you'll start why some of this "rules" have been broken. (Is it possible in English to "break a rule"? What would be the correct expression?)

"Bend the rules" or better yet....

"Rules are made to be broken"

From my understanding, and I have very little... it was just a conversation I was having with my uncle who used to be a professional. All the rules are a must to study and become expert at. But it is the breaking of those rules in specific ways that make some of the best photographs.

I was also one of those whats a good book posters. Apologies, shoulda done a proper search first.

I agree ... Rules are definitely made to be broken ... but in my case -

I think I'd prefer to learn the rules before I start breaking them ... this way I know why I'm doing it ... not that I'm trying to compare myself here but if you look at some of the early works of the likes of Picasso you can see that he was working closer to the rules before letting loose the full force of his creative genius ...

Cheeers for all of that lads - to be honest had a crap day in work so wasn't in best form myself! (I'm normally quite a nice person!)

I spent Sunday in Kilmainham getting photos that were the basis for paintings, however I thought at the time that some would look great in B&W as photos alone.

having looked at them again, I already picked up on loads of mistakes!

Thanks for all of the advice - maybe I will stick around here for a while ;)

I have to thank a lot too, so I'll try to avoid breaking the rules of English a little more :-) And to bend the rules of photography ;-)
