i have a dream of living in a log cabin in the woods and was wondering do coillte ever sell off land or how difficult would it be to find a site in such an area?

What a lovely idea, but just one word of caution. Coillte will fell a crop of trees after 40 - 50 years, so while you may retain the trees on your site the rest surrounding your site will be gone and turned into mdf soon after your purchase. Also your trees would then be subject to windthrow and would probably also need to be removed. I know a german couple who bought a house next to a coillte woodland and were so devistated after the clearfell that they moved back to germany. Also lack of light during the winter would be a problem, as would the damp due to lack of air movement..

Another posibility for your dream is to buy the largest site you can and to create your own natural deciduous woodland environment, ensuring plenty of winter light, air movement, privacy, paths, etc. Depending on what you plant, and site conditions, a woodland effect can be achieved within 10 years, even on a small site.

    ;)

cheers for the advice, oldtree.it wasn;t something i thought of and to see 'your' forest get hacked away after living in an area for some time must be rather devastating.thanks.something to ponder on.
