Nope, bt it certainly is a classic and possibly the 3rd most quotable movie ever (after Big Lebowski and This is Spinal Tap.)

"You can stuff it up your arse for nothing and fúck off while you're doing it! "

Very possible that it's the best ever. Brilliant acting, fantastic soundtrack, humour. It can make you cry both with laughter and sadness. When Withnail says goodbye to I in the park and delivers his monologue it is just awe-inspiring.

It proved you didn't need a plot to be a great movie. I've done the drinking game btw. I'm a big lad and I was drunk for 3 days after.

best film i have ever seen, all that hollywood junk that comes out theses days, all effects and no script, this goes to show whats important, characters and story, not freaking budget and effects

Meh! I am a fan of quirky/left-field comedies but the wildy overinflated opinion of Withnail and I leaves me cold. Its quite good but not a work of genius. The fact the writer/director Bruce Robinson has done sod all except dine out on his debut should be a warning!

    Mike.

    Thank you Mike! :)

    It's also overly long.

I don't agree. Sure, Robinson hasn't been successful by any measure, but I thought his film How To Get Ahead In Advertising was very overlooked.

I'd actually be of the same opinion myself. Although I've always enjoyed the film whenever I've watched it I've never understood the Godlike status that it seems to have in some people's eyes.

I wouldn't hold too much credence in that. Harper Lee only wrote one book in her lifetime.

Competely agree. It's one of those oft-quoted movies that, when I saw it, I felt I had missed something. Sure, there's some humour in it but it never really struck me as particularly clever, and the wit was drained from it by having it overly quoted by college students once they had worn out their tiresome 'Simpsons' references. *Shrug*

I think that having people quoting the film left right and center could easily ruin a film for you. Kinda like a film with too much hype that wasn't justified by the actual quality, or the comedy film that had all the funniest bits in the trailer.

I love the film, and I think Pigman II hit the nail on the head when he said it's in the same league as The Big Lebowski and This Is Spinal Tap with reguards to quotability. I think if you've heard the quotes already, then it's just like having the film spoiled for you, and you're probably missing out on the impact of hearing it first time in the context of the film.

Don't get me wrong, it is a great film. But I do understand where people are coming from when they felt underwhelmed by it.
