Hi All, I was hoping that someone could give me some advice on what a good adult starter drum kit would be. I want to get one for my boyfriend but I know nothing about drums. What should I look for to be included in the kit.

    Thanks

    Hello,

have a look on www.thomann.de, they're a German shop but will ship to here for €15 or so. Pretty much all the kits there would do, but really just find something that fits your budget. As with anything in life, you get what you pay for, but if you see something that you think might fit the bill ask about it here and someone should be able to give you advice in specific kits there.

Shipping is free on orders over €200 too :)

Doctor J pretty much gave all the advice I was going to give... Be sure to buy a few pairs of sticks though, because they WILL get broken :P

A good adult starter kit is a 5-piece...meaning 5 actual drums...these being 1 kick drum, 1 snare drum, 2 rack toms and 1 floor tom...
With this, you'll need cymbals, a hi-hat and maybe 1 crash cymbal and 1 ride cymbal....this was my first starter kit and I turned out alright..... :)

Pearl Target, Forum or Export series are always great kits to start on.....Export leaning more towards the pro range yet still keeping within a budget!

Starter cymbals however are the dodgy end of things as cymbals can be cheap and tacky and will sound horrible and crack easily...these are generally the one's with starter kits...something to learn with more than anything else...
Cymbals can cost up to 400 euro each...sometimes more...
Sabian B8's are a good low budget and good sounding cymbals...

Can I ask what your budget is? I could send ya some examples...

    Hope this helps...
    Chris

I started out with Paiste 101's...bought them on musicstore...€128 was the package but with delivery and vat it came to €200. I got hi-hats, crash and a ride and they sound brilliant. I'd recommend them...

i was just looking through thomann for this thread and i'm i missing something or are the price differences ridiculous:

    Forum: http://www.thomann.de/ie/pearl_fx725sc_forum_drum_set_31.htm

    ELX: http://www.thomann.de/ie/pearl_elx825_270_drumset_export_select.htm

Surely the forum is overpriced there!

Well Im sure the price difference is taking into account the fact that you get a thrown, cymbals, sticks and a dvd with the Forum??

How about Sonor? They would be sufficient for starting out on. You dont need an exorberent Pearl kit and Expensive cymbals unless you are doing some serious gigs, for starting out a sonor kit would be grand. I got mine off thomann when i started, still have it now, only thing is the cymbals they give with it are crap

Hey I went all out and got the millenium MX500 from thomann. Ive been playing on it years now and its perfect for a starter kit. I got the kit and sabian B8 cymbals. Over the years ive added and improved things. Once i start giging I plan on buying a nice set but as for now its grand! Its affordable and gud craic! You never know if it's just a phase and its a lot of money wasted, I've seen it happen too many times!
