    Howdy folks,

Don't know if anybody has spotted this yet but there's a 20% discount on all hardware & games in Tesco (exclduing Xbox).

The PS3 is reduced from €630 to €505. Quite the discount I say! Discount applies to games as well.

I don't think it comes as a bundle though. Is this a good deal? Should I be stocking up?!

If thats the deal of 2 extra games and controller for €629 now at €505 you'd be mad not to. You are saving around €200 if thats the case.

If its just a PS3 for €505 get the package deal for €629 instead.

More than likely he knows someone who works in tesco with a 10% discount card.

    He works in Tesco ;)

I'm going up to Tesco tonight to investigate!

it is just the console, basic pack with no games.

I was in tesco earlier to check it out - and they had no information saying they had any games with the pack - just a sign on the basic PS3 pack saying it was 20% off. If you get the deal in Virgin it is A LOT better imo. by two games to add on to the tesco deal and you arrive at the virgin deal, which includes 3 games and an extra pad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,132 ✭✭✭silvine

Yeah but the bundled games aren't exactly great. I'm not really into racing games. Resistance is the only one I'd really play.

No real need for a second controller either. Seems to me the Tesco deal is a good way to save money.

well you could get Ridge Racer, Motor Storm and F1 in the Virgin deal.

Personally, I'll be going for Resistence, Motorstorm and Ninja Gaiden.

Fair enough though, if you don't want a second pad and only 1 of the games, the tesco deal is the way to go.

Picked up a PS3 there this morning got a pretty sweet deal.
PS3, ridge racer, resistance FOM, harry potter, & the prestige and Rockey Balboa on bluray all for €639.99. Checked tesco and they didn't know what i was talkin about.

:( Went to Tesco in the Crescent in Limerick. They had no idea what i was on about. no Ps3 for sale even. :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,662 ✭✭✭savemejebus

the only tesco in limerick that i've seen with the ps3 is the one in arthurs quay. They had a wii too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,688 ✭✭✭Nailz

But who wants a Wii? I don't! I went into the Tesco in Cavan Town the other day they had no clue what I was on about! No PS3 for sale either! I also seen a PSP with no price marked or no games or any accessories! Advise... don't go into Tesco, it's filled with eastern Europeans or people that now nothing about nothing for workers! And they have really not much to offer... Like check this out, it costs €505 in there gets you the console and according to other people 1 game. But as in HMV you get 2 games + 2 Blu-ray's and a SIXaxis controller for €630! I'll work this out for you... you get one extra game which is €70, along with 2 blu-rays which is roughly €50 (everybody has different prices for these fella's & could get dear at €60 for the 2) and ofcourse a SIXaxis controller for €45 and add on to Tescos price... tah-dah €670, €40 more than HMV! Save the bother of being misunderstood by the staff and having €40 taken out of your pocket by going to HMV.

Guess who can really save you money?.....

Jesus i'm not surprised if you speak like you write.

Thats not very nice at all :(
    Nailz wrote:

The Blu-rays are over €40 each by the way. The two i got in HMV package were €41.99 and €38.99. Probably the only two blu-ray DVDs i will ever buy until they come down in price. Agree with you in this respect the HMV bundle is about the best out there.
    Nailz wrote:

Not you anyway Nailz, you just repeated exactly what everybody else said in the above thread, congrats Heres your medal.

As you have already mastered the copy and paste function you must have lots of time to learn how to punctuate.
That’s probably one of the most confusing posts I have ever read. Your talking about Tesco one minute and HMV the next.

I still can't understand how you managed to write about 100 words without a full stop.

Just for the benefit of those who may like to read Nailz's post it heres what i think he means.

    I.e DON'T BUY A PS3 IN TESCO.

I'll work this out for you. You get one extra game which is €70, along with 2 blu-rays which is roughly €80 (everybody has different prices for these fella's & the could be as expensive as €80 for the 2) and of course the SIXaxis controller which is a €50 add on to Tescos price. Tah-dah €780, €150 more than HMV!
This will save you the bother of being misunderstood by the staff and having €150 taken out of your pocket by going to Tesco.

I.E IF YOUR GOING TO BUY ONE. BUY IT IN HMV INSTEAD AND YOU WILL SAVE €150

Dublinstiofan - How did you get The Prestige on blu-ray as part of the deal? I thought that you could only get Casino Royale and Blackhawk Down?

Got it in HMV Tallaght yesterday & they didn't have either Casino Royale or Blackhawk Down on Blu-ray so i was allowed choose whatever i wanted.

Naturally i chose the most expensive two :D

If you want to choose your own head to Tallaght.
One more thing don't get Rocky Balboa watched it last night. Its a terrible film, outraged i picked it now. Crystal clear on Blu-ray though ;)
I had to pick mine under pressure so make sure you have a quick look at what you may like before you go up to the counter to get the console.

And what are you talking about who wants a Wii? It's the top selling next-gen (all be it not a true next gen) console on the market. It's outsold the 360 and the PS3 without breaking a sweat. Suppose a sweating console might stop ya buying one though.

Eh, the 360 is still ahead of the wii.

The tesco in the Dundrum shopping centre had a big sign attached above their PS3s saying 20% off.

That's crap about the blu-ray's. Didn't fancy getting Casino Royale or BHD, but now I have them. They wouldn't change them for me, would they?

Could swap ya Rocky for Casino Royale if ya like. Just a warning though its ****e.

What I was saying was at the rate Wii's are selling per month they are outselling the other two consoles.

At the moment the Wii is 1 million consoles behind the 360.

    http://www.gamepro.com/news.cfm?article_id=123728

My point was that the Wii is selling at a much faster rate than the 360 and the PS3. This link is a little old, from June just gone.

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/nf/20070725/bs_nf/54123

This illustrates my point that someone out there wants the Wii...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,132 ✭✭✭silvine

Well if someone wants the PS3 there is no offer in Tesco. Rang the Dundrum branch at lunch -€629 for a console and no discount.

Gamestop are selling second hand ones for around €500 though...

I wouldn't trust a second hand XBox 360 but I'd consider a second hand PS3 to save a bit of cash. Unless your into racing games the bundles are not great. And who needs to spend an extra €129 just to own a few blueray DVDs?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 333 ✭✭McGintyMcGoo

you could also try this deal in Komplett where you can get the PS3, 2 games and an extra controller for €609.99. ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,132 ✭✭✭silvine

There's a ten euro delivery charge with Komplett, bringing it up to €621.99.

At that price you may as well pay the extra bit and go for the HMV deal at €629.99.

Just not sure I'd get great use out of the extra controller is all. And they're only selling for around €30 on eBay.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,190 ✭✭✭Dublinstiofán

you could also try this deal in Komplett where you can get the PS3, 2 games and an extra controller for €609.99. ;)

Why would you buy it on Komplett and have to pay shipping when the same deal is cheaper in Xtravision?

€599 for PS3, 2 games, extra controller and €100 vouchers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,132 ✭✭✭silvine

€100 vouchers? That's a great offer. Might drop in there this evening! Tesco last night, Xtravision tonight... this console better be worth it, the XBox is tempting me!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 333 ✭✭McGintyMcGoo

Dublinstiofán - According to the Xtravision website, it's €629.99 for that deal with no vouchers! Did you see the deal in store?

silvine - Don't forget to offset the cost of your taxi or bus, your time and energy that you would spend having to pick the deal up yourself as opposed to having it delivered to your door :D

I'm not up to speed on games consoles but would it be fair to say that the only real difference between both of these is the blu-ray disk player??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,132 ✭✭✭silvine

I rang Xtravision there. There is no offer including vouchers. She said there was one a while back though. The current offer is as McGintyMcGoo says. Shame really, that was pretty good.

Yeah the blueray is the main big difference between the two and is the reason why I'll probably go for the PS3 over the Xbox 360.

There are a few other minor differences which people have argued about for hours on these pages;)

Apologies, it was actually Xtra-game which i imagined is a brance of extra-vision. Theyre in the square tallaght.

I'm nearly positive its as i described above.

The package was definitely €599 anyway cause its on a huge poster in the window. And am nearly sure there were vouchers, it said save €200 anyway.

Might be worth giving them a ring.

And take it for me i have had an PS3 and a 360 premium in the last month and a half and i would never go back to a 360. Even if a 360 was handed to me for free i would sell it, not play it.

Why? The PS3 might be head and shoulders above the Xbox hardware wise what with Blue-ray, wireless etc.

However, software wise the Xbox has the PS3 licked e.g. Gears of War, Halo 3, . One of the best shooters in recent years, FEAR, didn't even port that well to the console. And a lot of the great games coming out will be multi-platform e.g. Call of Duty 4.

And don't forget Microsoft have signed a deal with the GTA4 makers for Xbox only content – a bit of a coup considering this WAS a Playstation title.

The PS3 only really seems to have it in terms of racing games and free online content.

They've dropped the ball compared to Microsoft, and even Nintendo, when it comes to triple AAA exclusive games.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,324 ✭✭✭chrislad

The offer has ended AFAIK. It was 20% off all games and consoles until 5-08 according to Tesco Arthurs Quay.

Your right the Blu-Ray and wireless are top class. I set up the wireless on the console once and every time i turn it on it continues downloading what i had started the previous time the console is on. The €89 wireless adaptor for xbox didn't cut it with me one bit to be honest. Nor did the Live Membership @ €50 a year, thats a new game in my mind.

Software wise your right at this very momet, but this time next year it wont be like that. At the moment every game title appears to be on the xbox and comes a bit later on the PS3. Colin Mcrae Dirt for example is out in Nov (or so)on the PS3. But you have to remember that Xbox has a year headstart on the PS3. So effectively this time next year the PS3 will have all the games too. And not only that but it may have games before the 360 or in a worst case scenario have the same date of release, win win!

I played Halo once and didn't see what all the hype was about and never played Gears of war. Maybe i don't know what i'm missing but at this stage i'll never know cause i sold the 360 and bought the PS3.

Problem i had with the Xbox was that i couldn't get used to the controller.
So the same PS3 controller was a big plus for me. That coupled with free wireless and Blu-ray won me over. But not before i did the stupid thing buying the 360 (due to its price) in the first place. Ah wel you learn from all these little mistakes.

To be honest i don't care for extra features 98% of the GTA4 game will be the same regardless of the console.

The MGS is my favourite game series so MGS4 is essential.
I know it will probably end up multiformat. But choosing PS3 not only do i have the guarantee that it will be on the PS3 but that it will probably be on the PS3 first.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,132 ✭✭✭silvine

To be honest I probably agree with you.

I'm going to go for the PS3 on the basis of the hardware. I have a HD tv and even if I never play a single game, I will definately use the Blueray. Xtravision are even starting to include them in their rental selection.

It's just at the moment, it's hard not to look a little enviously at the XBox 360's library...

I'll probably take a chance and go with Sony. Most XBox games make it to the PC in the end anyway.

Whats wrong with the wireless adaptor? It works fine for me.

The playstation network maybe free but its also useless. I'd rather pay the 50 quid for xbox live.

Selling a 360 to get a ps3 right now is madness.

That may have been true at the consoles launch, but not anymore. Between now and christmas the software lineup is looking a lot stronger. Most big games are multi platform and there are some good exclusives and PSN games on the way.

What's wrong with the wireless adaptor is that its €89 and €50 a year to use it.

The Playstation network has the same demo's and movie stuff that Xbox live has. Just as its a year younger so its still growing. It will be packed with stuff in 6 months time. And the best bit is its free.

Well its not very stable; a lot of people find it drops frequently. The chat function is very poor in comparison to the 360. Its doesn't allow the users to talk whilst doing different things, theres no headset supplied and the cheapest headset worth using is gonna cost 50 quid. So if you do play online you can be sure that most people wont be talking.

Then theres the small irritating things; If someone sends you a message you have to quit the game to check it, you can't send invites, you can't leave voice messages, you can't go online and access your account see whos online/send messages etc.

None of the above is helped by the fact that most games dont even feature online play.

However i have faith that all these weaknesses can be sorted out but its not gonna happen overnight.

Then when you consider that the lionshare of must have games are gonna be on the 360 for at least the next year it seems silly to get rid of it for a ps3.

When the PS2 was released I remember developers saying that it would take months and months to develop games to use the full potential of the console. Then X-Box came on the scene and it struggled due to the lack of games, doubts over backward compatibility. After a while the situation improved. When the next gen X-Box comes out (if MS can stem the losses) it will also leave the developers trying to get games to use its potential, by which time the PS 3 will have a massive library utilizing its full power and the X-box will probably seem lame.

    Swings and roundabouts.

The wireless connection on the PS3 hasn't dropped once for me and to be honest i'd imagine that s**t routers and some idiots setting them up at home networks without a clue are at fault for signal drops.

Well i can agree with you that some of the above features are only developing you seem to be forgetting that the x-box has been out over a year more than the PS3. All of these features will be further developed and firmware updates will allow the kinks you mentions be ironed out in the near future.
So if you do play online you can be sure that most people wont be talking.

Don't agree with this. The only game i played online was Rainbow six Vegas and 5 out of 6 players had voice capabilities, you can guess who the odd one out was:rolleyes:

    Not for long;)

Don't think so. The only exceptions i can see is Halo 3. From what i can see its only the backlog of a few games such as Colin Mcrae dirt need to be cleared and released on the PS3. From then on (October or so of this year) almost all games will have the same multiformat release date so no more waiting.

And i think it made perfect sence for me to get rid of the console, i bought on 4th of July and didn't like it. Made sence to shift it before the prices of the system dropped with the release of the 360 Elite.

I think it would be daft to get rid of the 360 when Halo 3 is so close to being released. Might as well keep it and see what Halo 3 is like, finish the single player and then get rid of the 360.

I think the 360 has far too many problems with the hardware. It is just way too cheaply made as loads of people keep having problems. Ms were stupid not to revise it and fix its problems earlier. Now they are left with loads of support issues to fix for users.

I think Xbox Live is great but an absolute rip off. 50 Euro a year (you don't have to buy the wireless card BTW, a simple network cable will do and more reliable) to play and then they start trying to charge for avatars and other downloadable content. No other service is charging, if they want to charge a flat fee then most of the other stuff should be free. Charging for horse armour is a disgrace, level maps I can understand, its the crappy stuff thats really cheap and not worth any money that they charge for that annoys me.

I have no intention of getting Ms points.

BTW just thought I'd say that this seems like a really good deal. This thread seems to have turned into an Xbox Live V PSN thread in the last few posts.
