Hey, on our PC @ home we have Norton AntiVirus 2005... It works perfectly, but it seems to me to be a bit of a resource-hog, computer takes a while to load up because Norton is loading and stuff..

My question is this: Is there a free alternative to Norton that would provide same level of protection? And if there is would it be less of a hog on resources?

AVG, avast! or Anti-vir will provide much better protection and less problems. They all have free versions available, I use avast! myself. Uninstall Norton and destroy the CD. :)

Pick and choose from below. Personally, I use avast! for AV and Comodo for the firewall.

Are they quicker than Norton? I've used Avast! at work, seems good (except that creepy American voice: "Virus Database has been updated")

God i was actually thinking of writing a thread.mine does the same take over 5 minutes to from the time i log on to the time i can use the comp.

Question-- I use Norton and AVG ( Like the Corkman who wears 2 condoms--To be sure to be sure) If i was to disable Norton would AVG be enough protection for my Laptop?

Don't use two antivirus products on the same computer, its a resource hog (if both do real time scanning, every time a file gets accessed it will be checked by both AVs, which could lead to locking problems as well as other conflicts), and they don't tend to respect each others lockers, which can lead to false negatives.
