Hi Folks,

I have a Mac Mini and a PC setup with a KVM. I have both windows and OS-X set to use 1280x1204 as their screen resolution andbut it seems like the OS-X has a much chunkier interface than windows. I dont mean just the dock the text is bigger etc. Is there anyway to reduce this so I can make better use of my screen area (I have only a 17" monitor)

Change the resolution on your Mac Mini.

Are you using 1280x1024? I think 1024x764 is better on a 17". If the resolution you want isn't listed, you can edit a file to use it. Open /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist as root [sudo]:
...
<key>Graphics Mode</key>
<string>YOUR RESOLUTION HERE in the form 1280x1024x32</string>
...
Save and reboot and open preferences again to change resolution.

i find this very strange......pixel for pixel I've always found OSX to be more real-estate efficient. Perhaps change the zoom of the dock and set it to auto-hide.

These settings can be found in the system preferences.

FWIW you should aim to use the native resolution of the LCD panel irrespective of OS for best image quality.

Google the specs on your monitor and set accordingly.

Hi Folks,

Yep I have set the monitor the the max resolution it can do and the dock is set to small. The desktop icons are still huge by comparison not to mention text in every application. There doesnt seem to be the same scaling as there is in Windows and Im honestly shocked.

well if its just desktop icon size you're worried about...

click on the desktop and hit ⌘j and play with the sider

other than that i'm at a loss.....i've run my PB at crazy res on big screens with no problems...Could it be the KVM??

Hey Folks,

@Baby - That seemed to do the trick, for some reason the icons were set at 48 and text at 14.
