hey, just got a new laptop running Vista home basic and want to transfer all my music etc. from my Xp desktop. I have them both connected to a netopia wireless router, the desktop through an ethernet cable, the laptop through wireless. Whats the best way to shift loads of stuff from the desktop to the laptop and how do i go about doing it? thanks in advance.

Vista has a file transfer utility in it. Use that.

ok thanks, i tried that but it's too difficult to pick which specific files you do and don't want to transfer, is there a way i can browse the files/folders on my old pc and just copy over the ones i want to my new computer? thanks again

I've never had much look getting a satisfactory transfer going, and so If I were doing this, I'd just go through the my document folders and burn some cds/dvds with the files that you actually want on them. It's far less cluggy than taking over program or system files that Windows will think you need. If you don't have a burner, then I guess try using an external hard drive of some sort...

ok, what i've done now is right-clicked the root drives of the desktop and in properties i've changed the folder from private to shared, so now the drives are appearing in the network section on the laptop, i can access all the files and folders from there now. Haven't tried copying anything over yet, but i presume it'll be easy enough!
