I'd agree with you. I chose the Snes over the DS because I often go back to play Snes games on the emulator while with the DS I usually play a new game to death, then get sick of it.

The only Nintendo consoles i own are the DS and the Wii, and although the DS kicks ass, i chose the Wii. Because it kicks ass even more.
The only time I ever played SNES is on an emulator... I've never actually played a real one.

Well my dad got us a nes but never had that many games for it, that was my first time playing nintendo (battle of olympus, super mario etc) never had a snes because I was realy young and thought the mega drive was cooler and it was brillaint in all fairness.

Then bought a gameboy for pokemon, as much as I loved it I never played it for besides pokemon.

Then when I was 10 we got a N64 now that was great it really was bought loads of games had so much fun with it and thats when I became a nintendo fan.It was in my opinion nintendo's best console so far even if it did get beat by the ps.

Then bought the gamecube on its release date because at that time i was a big nintendo fan (may 3rd 2002 i believe), bought the black version plus a extra controller with star wars and loved it, Didnt make the slightest difference to me that all my friends had PS2's because I thought the gamecube had the best games by a long shot

Bought a DS soon after its release though I must say other than mario kart ive never really got into it, im sure its great but havent given it the time.

Then bought a Wii on its release ok zelda was class but im still waiting for big titles

My vote goes to gamecube because overall I gave it the most time and it had the best games

I find a lot of people who prefer the N64 had it as their first console. (Or first *proper* console experience) So there's all that nostalgia attached to it. To be honest, apart from a hand full or so of games, it didnt really bring too much.

Most people I've met who have been playing since the NES days will more than likely vote SNES. A console which is much more deserving of the title in my opinion.

Oh and shame on you Leakd! You're missing out on one of the greatest consoles of all time! :P

I'd definitely have to go for the SNES.

The Nes had some great games at the time but a lot have aged rather badly. There are some ageless classics though like Mario 1 and 3, Megaman 2, Final Fantasy 3 and Castlevania 3.

The Gameboy really was a remarkable piece of equipment. The technology was terrible but the battery life was excellent which was all that mattered. Despite the limitations the GB had some truly excellent titles like Pokemon, Mario land 2 and tetris although there was a lot of third party rubbish.

The SNES for me wins because it had by the the greatest number of truly classic games that are still a joy to play to this day. I also think the SNES games have aged remarkably well in looks terms do to the great graphics the SNES produced. You just can't argue with the likes of Mario World, Super Metroid, Zelda LttP, Cybernator, FF 4-6, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Sparkster and a whole lot more. The only problem was the underpowered CPU which meant there wasn't a good choice of shmups. At least we still got some great shmups from Konami in the form of Axelay, Gradius 3 and Parodius and from Compile, Super Aleste.

The N64 had some great games but many of them have aged quite badly. Goldeneye and Perfect Dark are quite poor nowadays compared to FPS's today. However there was Mario 64, a game that changed the way 3D videogames would be played from then on and still one of the best games ever created. There were quite a few excellent 1st party games and a few great 3rd party games but the N64 just didn't have the amount of classics as the PS1 and many times there were huge gaps of waiting for a decent game to be released. It did however make a superb multiplayer party machine.

Love my Gameboy Advance. It really has a huge library of excellent games. The only problem is that it took Nintendo 3 iterations of it's hardware to give us a machine that wasn't flawed in some way.

The GC suffers the same as the N64, a few truly amazing games that are unmissable but there were huge gaps were nothing was released and it died a premature death.

The DS hasn't been out long enough to judge. However I can see this taking over the SNES as my favourite console. There really is a silly amount of great games on the little machine already.

The Wii really needs another AAA game other than zelda. The wait for good games is silly. I just hope this is a lull and we see the big games arriving before christmas.

Everyone seems to be going for the SNES and its the only one I never owned (and gba), I did play it a few times but not much, only really super mario world (yawn) and rock and roll racing (which I loved already from the mega drive)

Im sure id love zelda on it but ive never given it the time.

Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, A Link to the Past, Yoshi's Island, Super Metroid, Super Double Dragon, Sunset Riders...ah I could go on and on. It's an amazing console. Has dated far less than 32 and 64 bit consoles.

SNES for me without a shadow of a doubt.

The NES was great (hours spent on Star Wars and Mario 3) but my NES, GB and N64 are packed away while SNES Mario Kart, Zelda and Donkey Kong still get regular outings.

I have a DS and wii also but its too soon to judge them.

Has to be the N64, not that I don't enjoy my other Ninty treasures, the Snes, Gameboys of all ilks and the rest but the N64 simply unleashed a new age of gaming on to us all, where the PS was transmitting the pleasures of mid nineties arcades to the home, the N64 took this new dimension and gave us some of the greatest games ever made, starting with SuperMario64, probably the greatest game of its type ever made, and then continued to bring us games like BlastCore, Banjo, Zelda OoT/MM, JetForceGemini, amazing stuff.
Where the Snes was in direct competition with the Megadrive, resulting in many cross platform titles and visuals, the N64, like the Wii today was relatively resistant to this weak, multiplatform development style and gave us exclusives that could only have appeared on the N64, the controller, the rumble pack, no load times, and not a shread of FMV any where, bliss!

*sniff, sniff* No Virtua Boy option :(

    :p

I went for the N64, it just seemed to really have THE defining moments in a lot of series and had the most fun games.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,478 ✭✭✭Bubs101

The N64 for me is superior. |For me, the SNES just didn't have a wide array of games. There was platformers and rpg's and the odd-side scroller. The N64 had everything and it has the Ocarina of time. Anyone who say's it hasn't aged well hasn't played it recently.

    Oh, and the Controller

    why no megadrive option??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,368 ✭✭✭thelordofcheese

I voted GC, mainly because it's the one i've had the most fun with (as in the one when i had the most disposable income to get all the games i wanted), as my N64 only had a handfull of games, and i only got my hands on a SNES a while back, which has since decided to stop working.
But it was a pretty tough choice, and so many good games....

I went for DS, its just so amazing and fun and has saved me many a time over the past 3 months from some extreme bordom like being stuck in airports for delayed plane journeys or in the underground. Many car journeys also made easier due to my DS! And the fact that I get all my ds games for a very good price:)
The SNES comes closely behind it was my first real gaming experience but unfortuately I dont have that anymore.
Im still holding out on getting a Wii, I would love to get one but apart from Zelda there is nothing else on it that interests me at present.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,503 ✭✭✭Makaveli

SNES. Probably the console I've spent the most time on. Loved it to bits and it had Mario Kart.

The GBA was kind of like a portable SNES so I really like it too but the fact that the DS can play GBA games means it will probably be my overall favourite eventually.

I love the Gamecube too but the SNES still betters it.

I've yet to try the Wii.

I'm marking the N64 way down as well because the PAL N64 was complete joke. Very few games were optimised for PAL other than the Rare games and we got some abominations like the PAL port Wave Race which was almost ruined by it being a slower game. The PAL N64 also didn't have any scart or s-video output while the NTSC one had s-video and could be moded for scart. I always hate looking at my N64 games since I know from playing them on the Wii just how much better looking they could be.

    Nerd :P

Does the Wii improve the graphics of N64 games significantly? And how does the Wii's control system cope with the N64.. Which obviously had alot more buttons.. Does the whole motion sensor thing work with them? I cant imagine playing something like Perfect Dark or Goldeneye on a Wii.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,395 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Seriously the visual quality from the N64 is atrocious, even for A/V output it's particularly bad and A/V output is usually terrible.

On the Wii you benefit from scart output or even composite if you get the cables to replace the awful A/V cable as standard. All the N64 games are also optimised to run at the proper speed and in full screen unlike the PAL games. So yeah, the games look a hell of a lot better on the Wii. The gamecube controller does a great stand in job for the N64 controller.

I doubt we will see Goldeneye and perfect dark on the Wii, both are rare games and rare are owned by Microsoft now.

you use either a gamecube pad or the wii classic controller to play n64 games on wii.

now for my pick, it would have to be the SNES.

i came lately to the NES and only had mario and duckhunt for it, whilst it was fun just didn't hold up to the fun i had with a SNES.

reasons being notably: ISS deluxe, super mario 3, super mario world, killer instinct, street fighter II i could go on but i wont.

it also had a perfect joypad as with all nintendo console at the time of their releases.

the DS is heading to be another console like the SNES, mountains of great games to pick for it and intuitive control method too.

Did you not hear me say Boo-runs?

    Boo-urns!!!

    ;)

Zelda was great, So was Mario and I have a soft spot for Lylat wars. But a hand full of decent games do not make a good console.

Oh and I never did get the whole hooplah with Banjo Kazooie. I always thought it was a big pile of crap.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,653 ✭✭✭steviec

I voted Gamecube because it's the one with Monkeyball and that's still the best game I've ever played on a Nintendo console. It had a fair few other great games too.

SNES would be second for all the usual reasons, and an honorable mention for both NES and Gameboy for being lightyears ahead of the competition at the time.

Never enjoyed many games on any of the other consoles there. The N64 joypad did my head in and the games have aged horribly, unlike the 16-bit ones, while the GBA and DS are heavily overrated IMO and I haven't enjoyed much on either of them, aside from remakes of older console games.

A handfull of N64 games? That'd be one. The convenient cartridge size made games easily grippable and impossible to lose. :p

The game cube wins because a freeloader works on it
