Connecting PC and Mac for Recording (also Suggest Interface)

    Hello,

Ok, so next month I'll be getting a macbook pro to replace my current laptop (P4 3 GHZ 1GB Ram). I figure I'll hang onto the PC since its not really worth much now. I have a Motu 8Pre that will be hooked up to the mac.

I'm wondering is there any way to hook the two of these together for music recording etc.?

I was thinking of sending MIDI signals from the mac to the PC to play PC only synths and then sending the audio signal back into the mac via patchbay.

I'm thinking you could do the same with audio output of certain channels, as in send them to the PC for Plug ins etc then send it back into the Mac (although I can't see too much use for this). This would done via the ADAT out of 8Pre, into an ADAT converter (Behringer ADA8000) and then into the analog inputs of the PC interface. It would then be returned to the mac via the PC analog outs to the Mac analog ins.

    So my questions really are:

    1) Is it worthwhile connecting the two together?

    2) Will there be significant latency in sending the Audio/Midi signals between the two?

    3) Can anyone suggest an interface for the PC the has 2 analog ins, 2 analog outs and a midi in? (I'm pretty limited on budget for this, maybe 200 Euro region. Ideally an ADAT in/out and firewire as well but thats probably not feasible)

Ok, so thanks if you actually made it this far and look forward to hearing replies......

Interesting idea, after all your old PC is still quite capable of handling the latest and greatest softsynths, there is this

    http://www.musiclab.com/products/rpl_info.htm

which seems to be the way to go, a gigabit ethernet connection would have very low latency for midi, then all ya have to do is patch the audio out back to your soundcard on your mac

All you would need would be a half decent soundcard for your pc like a cheap m-audio or something
