Hi, someone was telling me tonight there is a set day in the calendar year when anyone can make their will with participating solicitors in Ireland free of charge. Is this true? I've never heard of it.

Had they had a few drinks? :D Of course, you could make a will for free yourself any time day or night if you really like ;)

The last time I heard of anything like that was some years ago on a National Cancer day, solicitors offered to assist in making wills for £50 with the money going to a charity for cancer victims. Solicitors in general do not charge all that much to assist in making a will. It is possible but in my view foolish to try a DIY. A simple mistake can thwart your intentions, whereas a solicitor will have professional indemnity insurance to pay for her mistakes.

There was a 'Make a will' week a few years ago - I don't know if it's an annual thing.
It was more an awareness campaign. I made a will during it - I don't remember it costing a huge amount, but it wasn't free.

Most solicitors draft wills for free for their clients.

As a sort of "buy a conveyance and I'll throw a will in too" type deal?

More like "I draft the will for free and then get the job of winding up the estate". Solicitors earn good money, even by their standards, out of probate and associated work.
