    R4 Feedback program 3rd August 2007

All mentioned here before, but nice to here an official voice on R4 confirm it all:
    • DRM trial in Plymouth (Digital Radio Mondail, not Digit Rights management), results in 2008.
    • DAB power and transmitters to be increased 85% --> 90% coverage.
    • No plans for DAB+ on VHF, but DRM LW/MW/SW
    • NO plans for Analogue Radio turn off. Turnoff only applies to Analogue TV.
    • Agreed power consumption of DAB for portables still a serious issue.
    • Only use Analogue pips /chimes, Digital is delayed on transmit and receive by encoder/decoder and delays vary between radio designs

IIRC DAB has a clock function anyway (as does RDS) so its arguably superflous broadcasting big ben/time pips on DAB/Satellite

On the other hand are they actually going to fade out big ben (or the pips) on the digital feed (or insert some jingle)

    Random Fact:

During WWII they used a recording as a live signal might have "given away" metrological conditions to advantage an enemy airforce.

For the forseeable future they use same feed for analogue and digital radio, so Digital is stuck with the misleading pips or bongs.

Anyone needing within second accuracy is not using the pips or Bongs anymore.
