Amusing how the BBC spin it...

O'Connor left out of Irish squad
Johnny O'Connor's hopes of playing in the World Cup are over after he was left out of a 37-man Ireland squad for the game against Scotland next week.

Eddie O'Sullivan trimmed his original squad of 48 players for the first of two warm-up games which start with the Murrayfield match on 11 August.

Other players to miss out include Jeremy Staunton and Luke Fitzgerald but Brian Carney has been included.

Shane Jennings and Barry Murphy were not considered because of injury.

O'Sullivan named his panel after seeing his side through a week-long training camp at the University of Limerick.

"While the players that have been omitted may come back into the squad in the case of any injuries, it would be fair to say that these 37 players will form the basis of our final Rugby World Cup squad selection," said the Ireland coach.

Also missing the cut were Leinster backs Rob Kearney and Kieran Lewis and Ulster number eight Roger Wilson.

The team to face Scotland will be named on Tuesday, with a second warm-up game against Italy being staged at Ravenhill, Belfast, on Friday 24 August.

O'Sullivan will name his final 30-man squad for the competition on 12 August.

    JOC was never in contention.

Who will be the 7 to go ?

I don't think O'Connor's omission was ever in question really. BBC probably had a provisional deal with him to produce some kind of World Cup diary or something :)

Their choice of Diary writers couldn't be any worse than the 6nations ones :)

:D:D Thank God he's seen sense and dropped this lot. Useless(Staunton), overrated (Fitzgerald) and untested (Carney). Wise choices.

Mind you if ROG gets injured that leaves Paddy Wallace to pick up the slack in which case we're screwed.

i'm glad Carney's in , he had a mare against Argentina , but he'll only improve , and is quality ... watch this space ...

i was hoping Eddie might have twisted Humphrys arm , is there any chance now ?
cause if o'gara gets injured we won't get out of the group

Could someone actually tell me why Humphrys has ruled himself out. I would have thought he'd want a spot in one of the best Irish sides of recent times. The team needs him in there.

Also out of Heaslip,Quinlan and Ferris, my guess is Ferris gets dropped. I'd also see Mick O'Driscoll getting left out.

    Humphs is not coming back.

How would you spin that to the rest of the squad? Oh he doesn't have to train or anything, he can come straight in.

Humphreys retired. There was speculation from a long time back that he would come back for the world cup, even though the player himself denied it.

Hopefully we won't lose ROG, if we do then P Wallace it is.

Doubt Jennings will go - he didn't impress in Argentina and this injury was the final nail in the coffin. There's no way Gleeson will go.

So we won't have a back up specialist 7. Quinlan, Ferris or Best could do a decent job if required.

No surpeises to me in that cut. G Murphys experience was always gonna see him thro over LF or RK and Duffys brief game time was more impressive than all of KLs I felt and showed himself potentially with AT as the best centre cover we have.

JOC was never gonna make it and at least SJ injury makes the back row cut easier.

    So who gets cut next:

    Jack or Sheehan
Boss or Redden? ( 3 Hookers and 3 SHs may go?)
    Carney or Bowe1
    Mal or Cullen2
    Hogan or Mod3
Quinlan, Heaslip, Gleeson, Ferris ( 5 of ?)
One of the Bests to be cut or Young.. 6( not Neil )
    7?

The latter on each of the above are my bets to be cut....Not necesarilly my choices but forecasts..........

If 3 SHs and 3 Hks go I cant see a 7th to be cut outside Duffy ?? But I think we need more cover here than we do 3 of each SH/Hk....?

    What u on about?????

all bests will go, mal is a cert as are 3 hookers (sheahan cert as a 3rd), 3 scrum halves a definite also.

Having re-read this thread I think half the people on this thread are talking about Rob Kearney and the other half about Brian Carney :D.

    You have Ferris in twice.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,217 ✭✭✭LFC5Times

I hope Ferris makes it,but dont think he will.

He is picked at 7 against Scotland but unless they play Best as the 7 but Ferris is not a 7 at all.

But "apparently" EOS is going to go 16/14 Forwards/Backs, so the back 5 competition will be even tougher.

to be cut (17/13 split) :
    1. jackman
2+3. 2 of cullen/hogan/mod (i think eddie will bring mod even tho hes crap! hehe)
    4+5. 2 of heaslip/quinlan/glesson/ferris
    6. bowe
    7. carney/duffy

    16/14 split
cut another backrower and keep both carney+duffy

hehe or mayb he will surprise us all and cut ogara, sure we can always use our backup outhalf .......huh ......what u mean .....we dont have one ?

Assuming a 16/14 split I am assuming the following squad will be selected.

    Forwards:
Neil Best, Rory Best, Simon Best, Simon Easterby, Jerry Flannery, John Hayes, Jamie Heaslip, Marcus Horan, Denis Leamy, Donncha O'Callaghan, Paul O'Connell, Mick O'Driscoll, Malcolm O'Kelly, Frankie Sheahan, David Wallace, Bryan Young

    Backs:
Isaac Boss, Brian Carney, Gordon D'Arcy, Girvan Dempsey, Gavin Duffy, Shane Horgan, Denis Hickie, Geordan Murphy, Brian O'Driscoll, Ronan O'Gara, Eoin Reddan, Peter Stringer, Andrew Trimble, Paddy Wallace

    Cut:
Leo Cullen, Alan Quinlan, Trevor Hogan, Stephen Ferris, Keith Gleeson, Bernard Jackman, Tommy Bowe.

I think that it is up to Bowe, Carney, Duffy to play themselves in to the RWC squad, with Duffy almost certain to go because of his versatility and a straight choice between the other two. On the other hand I believe G. Murphy can only play himself out of a place in the squad with a very poor display against Scotland.

Only other possibility I see is that EOS may not take Mick O'Driscoll and bring another backrower (possibly Quinlan) as cover for the fourth lock position. Which is what people have been spculating based on the Scotland squad selection of two backrows on the bench. I think EOS only has two backrows on the bench to get one last look at both, and is not nescessarly an indication that MOD is not gonna make the cut, but that remains to be seen.

Perhaps there is also a slim chance that Jackman may get in ahead of Frankie but it doesn't look very likely at this stage.

That would be more down to a lack of familiarity on my part I suppose. I must confess I don't watch Ulster play very often. I guess he would offer slightly more positional cover than Healsip as it looks like a straight battle between those two?

If Ferris was to be selected would that leave Wallace as the main cover for the number 8 position, or can Ferris do the job there too?

I think not after today's game.

after that crap today, as much as it pains me to say i agree with hook, gotta go for a 17-13 split.

    no duffy and bowe.

back 5 of mal, cullen, best, gleeson & heaslip.

    we desperately need a 7.

this world cup is coming about 2/3 years too early for ferris.

few things to look on bright side about though, weather gonna be hot in france(hopefully!!) so will suit our style. can only get better after that aswell!

    hope horgan ok.

having said all that, i fully expect eddie to pick none of the above(bar mal).
