i may be in a position in the near future to negotiate a salary for a new job. I will be meeting wtih HR of the company and a Manager. Im pretty surei will get offered in the region of 40k - 46k ( ish). how do i negotiate so that i get the maximium that they are offering? when they ask how much i want, which they do, i dont wana be an idiot and say something rediclious like 60k, but i dont want to give too low a figure either. i want to give a figure that will leave me with above 45k after negotiations. any tips for negotiation?

if I told you that using a really professional recruiment consultant would sort this would you get mad!!!!!!

Seriously though, presuming your not going through a recruiter this is a tricky one, go too high = no offer, too low and cost yourself €€€

Try find out what that company typically pays for these roles if you can and then add 10% so they can negotiate you down to the "fair price".

If you can avoid naming your price first, as with all negotiating, you are in a stronger position......

    Try this

Them:"So what is your salary expectations?"
You: "I'm more interested in the right job with the right company so, while salary is obviously a factor, its not my main motivator. What do you feel is a fair salary for this role OR What are people with similar backgrounds to me paid??

    Hope this helps!!!!

dealing directly with the company myself, no recruitment agent. The thing is im not sure exactly what the salary expectation for this role is. i know this company pay above the standard salary for this particular role, over 40K anyway, but i want to make sure i get as much as they are willing to offer. if i say 48K ( as being a little unrealistic) we may agree around 45-46. thats how i see it in my head, however im new to this game!

Well you'd need to get some kind of idea from them first ideally - if they turn out to be offering 35 and you steam in with a request of 45 you'll be blown out of the water.

If you're sure they'll offer say 42k, you can say your expectation iis say 47k but you are 'willing to negotiate for the right position/benefits package' etc.

im pretty sure the offer will be over 40K. i wont leave my current job if they offer me less than 40K anyway, Id rather stay in my current job and spend my time searching for my perfect position. I dont think il settle for any less than 44k is but thats the bottom of what im willing to go for. thanks for the advice guys
