    hello lads and lassies.
a tincy bit of advice required. im presently drivin a 97 polo, 1 litre petrol (120,00 miles) and theres alot of niggley little problems as well as a clutch that needs replacing. rather than fork out guts of 1000 euro on it im thinking of upgrading to a 99 or 00 golf (best i can afford realistically)
id prefer to buy diesel, but petrol would be ok also, i was just wondering what people thought would be "good" milage to try get a 00 model at, as in if i buy one with 100K+ milage on it, obviously there will always be jobs to be fixed on a car but how good or reliable will it be?? diesel better than petrol (insurance for tdi is pretty similar to 1.4 petrols from what i can gather)

The average mileage for a petrol car these days is anything up to 15k miles a year, it anything from 20k miles and over for a diesel. So for a 1999/2000 diesel your probably talking about cars that have covered 100k miles already.

The thing is though judge each individual car on it's current condition and service history. A poorly maintained car will break your heart and hurt your wallet irrespective of what mileage is on the clock.

P.S. Golfs in general tend to be overprices especially diesels even with 100k miles plus. If you widen your choice you may be able to pick up something a bit newer that doesn't have it's better days behind it. If you really want a TDi then consider the Seat Leon and Skoda Octavia, both are based on the MkIV Golf anyway but cost a fraction of the price of a similar Golf. Also look at the VW Bora TDi, basically a Golf with a boot and cheaper to buy.

Also just watch out for the usual VAG TDi issues of faulty lambda & mass air flow sensors plus throttle body, make sure the timing belt has been changed if due.

cheers bazz, i was also considering the skoda options and bora options, just left them out of my original post. i assume the bora has no additional problems to the golf, why have they been discontinued??

Bora is mechanically identical to the MkIV Golf.

VW always play around with the names of their compact saloon. They try to market it as something other than just a Golf with a boot and it always seems to overlap with the bigger Passat. As a result resale values suffer.

The Bora was replaced by the Jetta in 2006.
