    Folks,

Im having trouble using a HD with Airport Extreme Base Station (802.11n)....

A few weeks back I disconnected the USB HD from the base station as I needed it to transfer a few files to a mate...

But when I re-connected yesterday it didnt show up as it used to on my desktop....(macbook btw)... so I went to the disk utility, no drives found...

It never really worked perfectly anyway, well it did when using my mac but on my windows pc it would only discover it on my admin a/c...

Tried resarting the base station but no joy.

    Any Ideas?

    Cheers, John.

There's an Airport Disk Utility in the Utilities folder, try having a nosey around that.
Also, I think you have to restart the machine to recognise the drive again, but I presume you've already tried that.

Have you tried hard re-setting and soft re-setting the base station?

Sorry I meant run a hard and soft re-set concurrently.

Theres not much to nosey around in the utility.... just two options and a list (empty for me) of disks....

Am hesitant to hard reset the base station as it took me ages to get the settings right for it to work in the first place... kind of got it by chance so dont think id get it again!

Its a strange problem as Ive turned off power of the HD itself a few times in the past, which I presume is equivilant to disconnecting, and when powered back on it showed up on my desktop automatically within a few seconds..

you're definitely not the first person with this problem....a possible solution being bandied about is to roll back the firmware on the base station from 7.1.1 to 7.1

    clicky below for instructions

    Problem sorted! :-)

After changing the firmware etc the HD still couldnt be found.... so just by chance I decided to rule a faulty HD out by connecting it to my laptop... I know, should have tried earlier... and sure enough the HD didnt even register with the laptop!

So I then knew it had to be the HD at fault... tried different USB cable... no joy....

Then it clicked with me... I checked the power output rating on the power supply... 9V... humm... then looked at the HD power input port... DC 12 V.... so I got a 12V supply of a different HD and hey presto! Discovered by laptop and base station when re-connected! :-)

Was lucky I wasnt spending hours scratching my head over this one as 9V supply gave enough for the LED indicator on the HD to come on!

    Ah well... lesson learned!
