Is it possible to insure a 1980 mini cooper under a normal insurance policy, does anybody know? It has a full NCT.

Unfortunatly I do not have a full licence yet, so can't have classic insurance, but I still really want this car? Advice, comments?

    Thanks for reading.

Hi there. In a word, no im afraid.

The age of the car is a massive factor when it comes to new/young drivers. Normally they wont touch a car over 15years old.

You might be able to get around it by being a named driver on somebody elses policy (theres a few lads I know who have done it this way)

Best of luck with it

Ring around... it used to be a case many insurers wouldn't touch a car over a certain age, normally 15 years old. Since the introduction of the NCT I think things have changed a bit - the NCT basically states the car is roadworthy so no reason not to insure it. I've had no issues insuring an '84 and '87 car in recent years.

BTW - you sure it's a Cooper? Did Mini make a Cooper in 1980?

There was a Cooper in the 60's, a Mini Cooper won the 1964 Monte Carlo Rally. To the OP, you're not alone, the following page on miniclub.ie may help :

Should be possible. I have my 1972 DAF insured with AXA on a regular car policy, because it's my "first" car (or should I say "primary" car as I've had loads), I didn't want a mileage restriction and it was cheaper than a 10k restricted.

As far as I know, some insurers even run a mile if it's over ten years old

I'd try AXA or Hibernian. They seem to insurer older stuff on regular policies.

    Hibernian will insure you.

There is no such thing as a 1980 Mini cooper.
