    Hi,
Any Police fans out there? Im trying to re-create Andy Summers tone. I know he used a tele with a gibson pickup but have no idea what his amps\effects where?

    Cheers.

I remember his playing as more standout than his actual sound.

    Wiki says,
"Eschewing fancy guitar pyrotechnics, Summers's style is notable for its depth of sound, characterized by tasteful use of compressor, chorus, and echo effects. He was an early adopter of Roland synthesizer technology. He is also known for syncopative rhythm playing."

I bet you could approximate a good Summers sound just by getting the first three things and a tele or strat in the same room. Maybe an amp known for a good clean sound as well.

A decent chorus and Delay will get you the basic sound. A slight bit overdirve with the volume pot on the guitar rolled off a bit. Works for me.

Flanger pedal. Don't think he really used chorus much.

Wasn't he the man who made the Roland Jazz Chorus amp famous "back in the day"?

It's been said a thousand times on here but a lot of his tone is in his fingers. I know most people will disagree but I saw a great example of this on Saturday. Doc J can confirm it.

Happen to know this as I am a great fan of his.
The fender he uses is quite special
    • Ferocious humbucking neck pickup.
    • Bridge pickup mounted in the body rather than in the broken brass (not chrome) bridge plate.
    • Control plate-mounted mini-toggle phase switch.
      Body-mounted preamp on/off mini-toggle switch
    • Rear-mounted overdrive unit controlled by a third knob below the two traditional Telecaster volume and tone controls.
    • Soft brass bridge pieces.
    • Schaller® tuners.
    For effects
    • MXR Dyna CompMXR Phase 90
    • Elecro-Harmonix Electric Mistress Flanger
    • MXR Analog Delay & Maestro Echoplex
    • Musitronics Mu-Tron III Envelope Follower
    • Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi
    • Roland guitar synthesizer GR-300
All of these put through a Custom Pedalboard built by Pete Cornish, also used by Dave Gilmour (Pink Floyd) and Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin)

But as mentioned by feylya, a lot of the tone comes from his fingers.
