queries about being self employed

Hey all; just posting here to get some advice so I know exactly what I'm looking to do when I approach revenue etc.

I'm a freelance journalist and as such (to the best of my knowledge) would be classed as self-employed.

I've been getting paid as a journalist through article contributions and shift work since around March 2006 and have held onto any invoices I got since then - what I'm looking to do now is file my 2006 income (it'below a taxable level AFAIK - but obviously I still need to declare it etc.) and get a P60 to show my earnings for 2006 (I need this for stuff like union subs).

So I got a TR1 and am about to send that off - what happens then and what do I do next? I'm not earning enough to have to register for VAT, so that's all good, by the way.

A few things I'm curious or unsure about:

    1) What will I get from Revenue after this TR1 is sent through?
    2) What will I need to fill in to file taxes for 2006?
    3) What will I need to present to them for income details (I have invoices etc. - anything else)?
    4) Once that's all filed and sorted will they issue me with a P60 for 2006 or will I need to request it?
    5) What else should I do in my situation to ensure I'm not leaving myself open for any future stress?

    Also one minor aside -

Given that I'm not registered for VAT and am going to register as simply self employed can I claim business expenses on things that I require in my day to day work? Or is this only open to full registered companies with accounts etc.? Would be nice to know if I can.

Thanks for all your help - just want to have my head straight on exactly what I'm doing and need to do in all of this.

Thanks Joe but I'm not looking for an accountant (I can't really afford one at this stage to be honest) and I'm happy to prepare and file everything I need myself - I'm just looking for some information and basic advice as it's all completely new to me.
