My Dad has asked me to source him a PC for about €600-€700. Won't be used for too much hi-end stuff.

Just surfing, e-mail, music, letter writing etc. Nothing that will be too taxing.

Had a quick look in PC World just to get an idea of price and what specs you get for the price. Saw ones from €550 up.

All had windows vista...so what RAM would ideally be needed, type of chip, memory size, make etc.

Not sure exactly about specific Vista requirements but for that sort of usage even the cheaper models would be more than enough for his needs. Maybe make sure to have 1.5-2G RAM, in case vista likes alot of memory?

Something like a 2-3MHz CPU (Intel or AMD), 250G Hard Disk. DVD - RW, 17" Flatscreen would be very attainable at that price and would be more than adequate.

After that look for extras such as anti virus, MS Office, printers etc.

    Marco_Polo - Thanks for that

Anti - No sig appearing now but I did have a gander earlier. Thanks for the offer but I know my dad will only go for a new machine, despite the extra spec.

Go for a Dell Vostro 200.. Practically the same as the Inspiron 530 except in black and the slight €200 difference in price tag :D
They are marketed as a business model but if you ring up they can put Vista Home Premium on it as an upgrade from Home Basic for €30+vat (not possible on the website).

I got this for €651 inc Vat and Shipping. Best Price Spec ratio around by far.

    Vostro 200
    Vista Home Premium
    E6550 Core 2 Duo Processor 2.33GHz, 1333MT/s FSB, 4MB
    2GB Dual Channel DDR2 667MHz [2x1024MB] Memory
    ATI X1300 Pro 256Mb
Hard Drive 320GB Serial ATA non Raid (7200 Rpm)
    E198WFP Value 19'' Wide Flat Panel (TCO99) DVI-D Black
Base Warranty - 1 Year Business Hardware Support - Next Business Day
Speakers External 2.1 Dell A525 Stereo Black with Subwoofer.
    16X DVD+/-RW
