Technical Question - Can Someone Explain?

    Guys

Ive been thinking and i just wanted someone to explain the general basics to me regarding the gearing, springs, and hopups of an AEG.

Is it not true that most AEGs have similar range, similar muzzle velocity, etc? In this case - what can be accomplished by doing things like altering the hopup, changing springs, fiddling with the gearbox, upping the power of the batteries etc... ?

ANY insight would be helpful and appreciated. I see all these customised AEGs floating around and i see people talking about customised parts etc, but im still confused as to WHY if in the end - each AEG is still 1Joule, Still ranging between 280-320Fps, and still has a range of around 40m?

    Thanks guys...

    Noob O'D.

Ok, Hop up is where at the start of the barrell there is a rubber ring. as you turn up the hopup it pushes the top of the ring down pushing it against the bbs as they pass it. this gives them a backspin increasing range but reducing accuracy.

Most aegs are quite similar in fps but ROF and accuracy can vary a bit. Also weight and size. Bigger springs increase the power but decrease ROF. Larger motors are needed to properly run bigger springs.

there is a website mechbox.com that is excellent explaing the bits and bobs.

to be honest there is a lot of hooey about airsoft but it is actually quite simple.

you can get more powerful springs some firing even faster then 500fps (obviously totally against the law here). playing around with your gears, shims etc you can dramatically increase the rate of fire, putting a tighter barrel in stops the bb bouncing around and therefore increases the accuracy and some say range. there is even a new item about a type of rifling in newer barrels to cushion the bb and stop it hitting the barrel at all. again some say that is total BS.

as for distance, a lot of it is about the trajectory..so do you arc or not and the more power you have the flatter the trajectory is.

the hopup was a major change tho as the spinning on the bb does make an incredible difference.

its a good question on the distance tho..every where i have played they have always been about the same power..so i cant give you a review of that..maybe some of the hardcore types can add to that

also the speed means its less likely to be affected by environmental issues like wind, leaves etc..
