Avoid TV Licence..

    Hi!

I am just wondering about (avoiding!) paying my TV licence.. I moved into a block of apartments with my girlfriend a few months ago, we are both full time students and dont really have the cash to pay the tv licence..

We have got several reminder letters to renew it, (the letters are addressed to the name of the previous tenant), I was just wondering how will they get us in the end or could we possibly avoid paying it? they cant come knocking on our door cause we live in a block of apartments so its just really through the post which we could claim we never got or opened cause its in someone elses name.. We are connected to ntl so will they get our names from them maybe?

Just wondering what are the next steps.. is it possible to avoid at all?

    * I do agree with paying it but its just that we are fulltime students at the moment and its an added expense that we would gladly avoid if at all possible. Our ntl package for tv AND broadband for the year costs the same price as this stupid licence for a couple of miserable irish channels.. like c'mon!

Getting rid of the telly is how you'd avoid paying it.

You can not avoid it. Whilst I hate every cent I must pay RTE as I never
watch or listen to them it is the law. If you can not afford the license
the simple solution is to get rid of your TV.

Just because you live in an apartment complex does not grant
you a form of immunity, TV inspectors have in the past used the
trick of ringing the intercom and stating they are calling from An Post
(the people appointed by RTE to collect the license) many people
have buzzed in what they thought was their postie with a parcel
only to discover it was a TV inspector.

I look forward on your feedback OP on why you feel so special that whilst
the majority of people, myself included, must pay the TV license you
    should not.

How is that right? the licence is only about 170 isn't it, I can't see you getting NTL and BB for that price a year.

why not drop the bb and NTL and you can then afford a tv licence.

Here's an idea - don't go out getting smashed on Thurday night for a month - you'll have the money between you! :)

Word of warning.. if you keep avoiding the letters, you'll get a summons.

I don't fancy your chances of getting away with it either by using the old 'the letter wasn't addressed to us' routine.

It's sh*te that we have to pay it, but pay it we must.

right, i was in an apartment for the last year and i never paid any tv licence nor was ever asked to!

A summons naming the former tenets has nothing to do with them, even if a guard arrives at the door with it in hand.

I would ignore it and dont let any body in to your apartment, develop a complex system of communication via tapping your fingers on the door and put bear traps in places TV license inspectors are likely to sniff around.

You're asking how to get away with something required by law on a public forum which is currently facing legal action. Of course it's going to anger some people. It would be stupid to think otherwise.

i haven't paid it in 3 years, and didn't pay it for 4 years before that

if ya ever open the door to an inspector, just go and buy one, (and move house within a year)

but to keep this post legal, you should buy one or get rid of the telly

c'mon, you gotta expect the high and mighty to come out of the woodwork for something like that!

In seriousness though, just return the letters saying 'not at this address' - that'll buy you some time.

Meanwhile, why not just put away a fiver a week each and buy it eventually.. I don't think being a student is an excuse not to!!

Who the **** are you? Did you think to yourself this morning "Oh no, myself and the girlfriend are tight fisted bastards and want to break the law by not paying for a tv license. Better put this little problem to people who do pay and then they might be able to come up with a way of not paying"

And then you wonder why people are complaining. Why don't you **** off you hungry ****.

    Well said, Mossy boy.

You'll probably get a rap for it, but sometimes moany spongers need to realise that part of growing up and facing independence is paying the bloody bills...

I look forward to your post on the Legal forum when you're looking for advice on how best to deal with a summons. :D

Hopefully NTL will pass on your details to the Inspector as with your attitude you deserve to get stung
for a charge that none of us like paying but as adults must do. Either pay up or get rid of the TV.

Cancel your NTL and put the subscription towards the license.

You may qualify for a free TV licence from the Department of Social and Family Affairs.
