Stranglehold for PS3 won't be region free

Midway in their infinite wisdom have decided that they will enforce region coding on both the special and regular editions of Stranglehold. This will be the first region encoded game on the PS3, a system that Sony said would be region free.

Add to that Midway's reported decision not to release the collectors edition (with HD version of Hard Boiled) outside of America and Stranglehold goes from a must-have to a can't be arsed game on my list.

Sony says a lot of things.

I am still looking forward to the game.

Well, Sony said the same thing Microsoft did, that the console itself is region free but games could be region locked, that's where the locking takes place. I was wondering when this would start happening with the PS3, this may be the first region locked game but I doubt it'll be the last, others will probably follow now.

I didn't know they weren't releasing the collector edition with Hardboiled here, I agree with savemejebus, all this just puts me off the game now. We'll see how good it is.

    The Midway Stranglehold Forum

The mod there, Echo77 posted the following:
    PS3 is NOT region free
Standard PS3 version is also NOT region free. Sorry, guys.
I don't know about Sony's promise, but all PS3 versions of Stranglrhold will not be region free. Sorry guys.

They didn't say that. They said it was the publisher's choice if they wanted one global SKU or not - not if they want to region lock it.

If it was as simple as the MS situation, I've no doubt in my mind that EA and the rest would have been region locking their games from day one. But they have not been. I'm not sure what's up with Stranglehold, but I think there's more going on here than meets the eye.

I was sure I read that before, but assuming you're correct, then that's worse, they promised region free gaming and didn't deliver.

This is odd, that same moderator says the 360 version *is* region free. I don't see why they're locking the standard edition PS3 one then, that makes no sense.

From what i've read on that forum that particular moderator seems to be a bit of a 360 fanboy, i've seen him pushing the 360 version over the PS3 version multiple times.

The only explanation I can think of is that with the collector's edition, they are enforcing region locking because of the blu-ray movie, but they can't be arsed to take out whatever region-locking in is in there in the standard version. It doesn't make sense otherwise.

It's probably just the collectors edition that isn't region free. I'd say there might be trouble with whoever owns the rights to hardboiled outside America.

Midway have seemingly changed their mind and all PS3 versions of stranglehold will be region free (according to the mod on their forums). In addition there should be no region restrictions on the HD version of Hard Boiled.

Bad news is that they still plan on releasing collectors edtion in North America only but at least we can import now :)

Amazon wont let me preorder the collectors edition (wont ship outside US), are there any US sites that are recommended for importing games? (I vaguely remember seeing a canadian site recommended a few times)
