EU Warranty on Electrical Goods

I remember seeing something in the Xbox forum where Microsoft had to fix Xboxes over 1 year old due to an EU law that gives 3 years warranty for electrical goods.

My sister got a laptop from Dell, which is 18 months old and giving screen problems, and Dell said she only had a 90 day warranty. I also have a 13 month old Macbook that is giving DVD drive problems (which I was told would cost 200euro to fix).

Can anyone provide a link to this legislation, if it exists.

I think you may be totally misinformed altogether!!

A warranty is an agreement by the makers that if anything goes wrong they will have it sorted for a limited time frame. When purchasing the goods you agree to this time frame.

I'm not so sure of that. My dad rang Dell today about the laptop, and they said it would cost 300euro to fix it. He asked about the 2 year warranty that was on electrical items according to the EU, and they said they'd call him back, which they did within 15 minutes, and said it would be fixed for free. This was the link I emailed him.

that was the european directive ... this is what it says in irish law..

Law isn't my forte, but that law says it's based on the Sales of Goods Act from '83 and the EU Directive. Either way, Dell agreed that it was law and have already agreed to fix my sisters laptop under warranty, even though they said it was 15 months outside their 3 month warranty period.
