My neighbours' house burnt out this afternoon!

I feel so sad for them; they are really nice people.

    All are ok, though.

Yowsa. Glad that they're ok, and also hope that they had insurance.

    Hope it wasn't arson

Was it something innocent and an accident?

That really sucks but I'm glad everyone's OK. I once helped clear out a burnt out house for a family friend, it was pretty depressing to see everything they had accumulated over a lifetime destroyed.

    hope that they had insurance

The only people who don't have house insurance are a) those without a mortgage, or b) those without a brain.

In case a) they're probably in state-owned housing, in which case they'll get bailed out as per usual -

Corpo Tenant -"me gaff's been flooded/burned down - and I've no insurance 'cos I drink all me spare cash and don't think about tomorrow"

Government - "here, have some tax payers money"

    in case b) - meh

You, my friend, are an arsehole...

Apologies for the abuse, but your little insensitive and completely irrelevant rant about 'corpo tenants' and getting tax payers money when you haven't a clue about what happened or who they were proves that I am correct.

Couldn't agree more. I grew up in a council house and it did burn down when I was about eight. Should I have lived on the streets? Although the crack factories that are in all council houses probably cause these fires so its their own fault...

I too grew up in a council house and have met plenty of people like magpie.
However personal abuse is not tolerated here.
    Apparently the dude doesn't abide.

From a gambling point of view insurance is a very bad bet as not only does the insurer have to use premiums to cover the cost of claims but also costs and a return on shareholders investments (targets returns are usually 15% on capital employed). So it could be argued that only irrational people HAVE insurance.

Of course people's risk averse nature ensures the insurance market exists as people prefer to pay extra for the incresed certainty that insurance provides rather than risk losing their possessions.

He's the only person on boards who has made it onto my ignore list, his post being quoted has just reminded me why the tool ended up there in the first place...
I know we should be attacking the post not the poster here, but I'll happily face a lifetime ban for the brief liberty of getting to say "MAGPIE IS A TWAT!"

magpie, is it lonely up there on your high horse?
I hope you are lucky enough never to need government assistance.
Not everyone living in council housing is a sponger. Maybe you should get out a bit more and meet some people who don't have their heads stuck up their arses. You might learn something from them.

cooperguy, post what you want, as long as it's not against the charter and it's on topic.
Speaking of which, this thread no longer is.
