Lake Orta, north of Milan...

...heading there for a wedding Saturday. Staying around for a few days, hiring a car, might head to Milan or over to one of the other lakes, like Garda or Maggiore, for a day or two. Is driving to Tuscany or Venice feasible within a 4 day jaunt, when one has to get back to Bergamo airport?

Venice would be a serious drive from Orta, you are better of staying in the area as there is planty to do and see without being stuck on the autostrada for hours. Also Venice in August would not be the best time to visit as it will be expensive, crowded and smelly.

My recommendations would be Milan for a day and then take in Maggiore and Como (a visit to Bellagio would be essential) for the rest of your time there. You can also head into Switzerland which is only about 90 mins from Orta.

The trick is to relax and enjoy Italy and not just spend a few hours in each place to say you have seen it. I would recommend the Ca D'al Rat (i know poor name etc) restaurant on the Borgonmanero road for a relaxing tasty lunch.

    Enjoy

Thanks so much for that. Might skip the Venice or Tuscany thing, especially as it will be my first trip to Italy and obviously my first time driving there. Switzerland is an idea I hadn't really thought of.
