What I would suggest is a regular heart rate watch from nike or whoever for about €80ish. Then the nike + thing to stick on your runner that connects to your nano. It stores distance travelled, informs you every mile via headphones and you can upload to the nike+ website. Sweet.

Or a Garmin - they have a range of models depending on your requirements. Check out their website.

it's the same company. look for their product ranges and you'll saee the watches. I'm not a fan of garmin myself. too bulky.

Garmin product range here. Links up nicely with Sportstracks software which is great for mapping and analysing runs.

The 101/201/301 are indeed bulky, but the 205/305 are okay.

I use a 201 which I'm very happy with (although it doesn't have a heart monitor which would be good). Can be picked up reasonably cheaply.

You can get a 101 on ebay for less than 100 euro - which is a fine entry level GPS watch, except it runs on AAA batteries rather than being rechargable (c.15hr battery life).

The problem with GPS devices as opposed to pedometers, is they can loose signal depending where you are (forest country etc) and they are over complicated.

With pedometers(nike + etc) you just run and have a look when your finished at how far you ran

Not sure I agree with this. Yes, I have lost signal a few times (normally in the same part of a paricular park I run in) but it's only briefly and the device catches up with itself when you exit tree cover...so unless you do most of your running through forests, that shouldn't be a problem.

In terms of complexity, my Garmin is about as complex as a normal stopwatch....mind you there are plenty of other features to be used if required.

    Personal preference I guess.

I agree with Peckham. I have the Garmin Forerunner 205 GPS watch and the signal is not an issue. I’m working in New York for the summer and bought it here about a month ago. Before my run, I stand outside my apartment block, surrounded by many other high-rise buildings and tree’s… and switch on watch to “Locate Satellites”. Within seconds it picks up signals despite being in big city! My run starts in a large park where I run under many large trees before hitting the Hudson River…. Lined with high-rise buildings and more trees! Only twice on my whole run does it lose signal and only at the same two places – where there is constant tree covering and as Peckham said, the watch always catches up with this small time lapse as I look at it just before tree covering and when come out again. I run every single day and since getting the Garmin 205 watch, my performance has increased tenfold. It really pushes you as your constantly monitoring your mph speed & always wanting to push it and maintain/improve previous day’s run. The interface is very clear, it’s very user friendly and the display nicely has the time, speed and distance in big font so easily monitored while running. Yes there are many features that you can choose to use or not. Running against your ‘virtual self’ is excellent. You can race yourself from previous runs and so on. Anyway I’ll stop raving about it now like a sales woman for garmin or something but I must say it has been a great investment and well worth it if you’re training for a run/marathon or wanting to improve running and fitness…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,578 ✭✭✭Peckham

irishfit.com probably stock them (or should be able to source one for you if not).

    Thanks for that.

Anyone know any shops in Dublin that sell good running gear (shorts, tops, socks, etc...) ?

Are pedometers not based on your stride length so if it differs on a run (slower or faster run, uphill or downhill for example) your distance will be off. Not a big deal of course as it'll get you fairly close.

I find mapmyrun good when you know what route you are going to take and I use GPS when in the mountains although some of the more tradional mountaineers I know refer to GPS as Gimp Positioning System.

    paddylast

I think you are referring to the Nike Pegasus 2007 model. I got a pair of these off Amphibian King in Bray.
I'm sure Damien mentioned they were ipod something or other
