I am playing old Dunlaoghaire for the last time tomorrow and the new one next week (hopefully). Anyone got any fond memories of the old course....the only memory I have is of losing balls over the perimeter fencing and the way they ruined one of the better holes (14th) by the erection in recent years of an ugly fence near the tee box. Still some nice holes and lovely looking old clubhouse as you play up the 18th....being careful not to overhit and land on the patio!

No way they're closing it already?!
Yeah I've played there a lot, especially in my younger days. Our schools matches used to be there. Short and tight, that what I remember of it! A good fair test tho'. A few good holes coming down the stretch, after you cross the road again. The dogleg left into the corner, the 15th is it? Always liked that hole but I think it's cos I birdied it 3 times in a row!

Any word on what the new course is like? What kinda condition is it?

    When is it closing ?!?!?!?

I was hoping to have a final nostalgic round - learned my golf there. Its just a victim of golf getting longer. Some lovely, but old style holes - really nice if played with equipment where 180 yards (incl roll) was a good drive and anything over 200y for single figure men only. The upturned-saucer style greens are a real old style feature - are there any in the new course?

    Memories ?
    - the first time I hit a drive down the step on the 12th
    - the cup final day was a great event and I havnt encountered it in another club yet
    - trying to bend it around the corner on the 11th
    - one of two only eagles in my life (yes the 4th. Still, the card said it was an eagle)
    - playing with a man who used to be low single figures but years catching up on him and drifted out to nine or ten:monthly medal : Having his best round in many a year : in contention : hit his second to the 15th green : before reaching the green went over to the window of the members bar : 2 putted 15th. : drove off the 16th : passing by the window again, two whiskeys were waiting for him : downed both straight : birdied 16, par 17, birdie 18 to finish even or 1 over and win.
    - slicing my drive on the 5th onto the 6 infornt of the green. Topping a 3 wood along the ground 30yards. Hooking a 4 iron back around the trees and into the hole for my most adventurous birdie.
    - sob:(

I think they take possesion of their new course this weekend but I'm not sure when the old course closes for good. It's sad to see it go, especially for the older members who will most likely find the new track a bit of a hike. Having said that, I think it's the only way forward as them and the course was getting more and more claustrophobic in recent years.

I've driven by the new course a few times and it looks like it is very exposed with not an awful lot of trees on it. I think the course is on two sides of a road so they will still have to cross a road like they did on their old track.

The new clubhouse looks pretty nice down there!

Played DL 3 weeks ago with a member. I think he said the official closing ceremony is this weekend? They've organised for all past Captains/Lady Captains to drive off the first tee for sentimental reasons. I think there is a comp on Monday and the course will be closed from then on.

Yes, the new clubhouse does look nice while the course looks very different to what the members are currently used to.

    Best of luck to them.

yes the tent is up for the final fairwell this sat pm. I played there yesterday and the 15th and 16th closed to make way for the tent....pity cause they two of the nicer holes.

Anyway, it was still in good(ish) condition but they all VERY excited about the news course. I agree with views that it may be alot for the older members but they have a new indoor practice facility as well as bowling green etc to help out.

Playing there on Tues/Wed am so will let you know.

    happy
