I'm looking to buy a Sat Nav unit and have being looking on Pixmania. I have been told that Navteq maps are better for Ireland and I'm just wondering which the following use as I am confused. Teleatlas or Navteq?

GARMIN Nüvi 350 GPS Navigator - Europe
TomTom ONE Stand-alone GPS New Edition V2 - Europe

Apart from the mapping which device would you reccommend overall?
Also if anyone knows of another device for Irish and UK use for under €350 please let me know me.

    Thanks
    Alan

TomTom are in the process of taking over Teleatlas and they have stopped using Navteq maps. Garmin uses Navteq maps so I would favour the Garmin.

    Hi

    Sorry for hijacking the post.

does anyone know if the C510 (for €260) that shows as (UK and Ireland) maps do they have any maps for Europe (mainly Spain and France) or do we have to buy them as an extra? how much are they?

Anyone would recommend a cheap system that includes street level in Ireland also Europe street level.

    Thanks and sorry again.

El Nino , Its not just about the maps . Its also about the way the maps are presented , Yes Tomtom are taking over Teleatlas but this will be a good thing for Tomtom users as the mapping from TE will be available quicker on your unit ( The main reason for aquisition was the hold ups in updates) . Now if you dont like the current TE maps on Tomtom you can roll back to the "old" navteq ones , which by the way are the current maps available on Garmin units and will not be update for at least 9 months .

The Tomtom (In my opinion) presents the mapping in a far better way to Garmin as I think the display on Garmin is way behind. (Sorry if I upset any Garmin users) .Plus there are lots of third party s/w available for the TT.

Sharkman, I agree with most of what you said and I have a TomTom myself with the latest Navteq maps. The thing that concerns me is whether or not Teleatlas is going to map Ireland properly in the next year or so. If not then I will be stuck with a choice between out of date Navteq maps which can't be updated or new Teleatlas maps with poor Irish coverage. That is why I would probably buy a Garmin now rather than a TomTom even if the TomTom is slightly better otherwise.

    Ok, Garmin it is then.

The only question I have now is whether to by the Nuvi 250 or the Nuvi 350.

The differences between the two from the Garmin website are as follows:
    Size - 350 slightly larger
    Weight - 250 slightly heavier
Battery - 250 (5 hours) 350 (8 hours) Not Important as both come with Car Power Adaptor
Voice - 350 speaks street names. Is this needed?
    MP3 Player - 350 has one but i wouldn't use it. 250 doesn't
FM Traffic Compatible - 350 has that. What is this?
    Audiobook - 350 plays them 250 doesn't. Not Important
    Headphone Socket - 350 has this. 250 doesn't

    Price
    250 - €269
    350 - €299

Really what I want to know is which to go for the 250 or 350? Is it worth an extra €30 for FM Traffic and Street Names?

I am not clear about what FM Traffic Compatibility is. Can somebody explain?

    Alan

The FM Traffic system doesn't work here anyway so you can disregard that point. What it is that real time traffic info is sent to the unit so you can take alternative routes etc around roadworkds, accidents etc.
