printer problems (alignment)

    I have a Lexmark X85 (it's a 3-in-1 yokey) and I'm having trouble getting the cartridge aligned.

I go through the maintenance and get a test page printed out - it then asks me to enter in whatever lines are the closest to being straight (for those not familiar with doing this it has a load of lines with numbers, each one slightly different from the last - some are slanted, some aren't) but most times there are no lines even close to straight, so I have to choose the least slanted one. In some cases none of the lines are even printed out, so I have nothing to choose from but still have to enter a number in.

All this means is the printer alignment is rubbish.

So is it a problem with the printer or the cartridge I'm using? I only got a new black cartridge recently and it's a 3rd party one but I would have thought that would only impact on the ink quality etc.

    Any thoughts?
