Changing Anti depressants

My GP diagnosed GAD and prescribed 75mg Efexor. They worked, but only to some exent, so he upped the dosage to 150mg, in my opinion to no beneficial effect. Side effects increased; greasy skin, no energy, sleepiness, erectile disfunction and emission problems. So I told him that if I hadn't had enough to worry about before I started taking Effexor, I sure had plenty to keep me busy now.

He decided to change me to Lexapro. So, I have been doing a winding down programme for the last few weeks - reducing the daily amount to where now I'm taking 17mg/day in 2 doses of 8mg (approx). The difference is amazing, skin is great, energy is back (I've started playing golf again after nearly 2 years of being too tired to bother) and sex is fantastic. Problem is anxiety is back as well. So I'm motivated to try Lexapro but have learned enough from Efexor to know that the down sides might be unacceptable.

I've three questions before starting Lexapro, has anyone any experience of their side effects (i.e. are they like those described above for Effexor), are they as difficult to get off and at this stage should I be able to cut over from Efexor to the Lexapro (10mgs/day is prescribed).

    Thanks

You should ask your doctor those questions, If you don't agree with or trust your Doctor get a new one. Different people react differently to medication. Medical advice really shouldn't be sought on the web.

fergusdo, if you want, go to your pharmacist and ask for a copy on the instruction leaflet for Lexapro, read up on it and then discuss it with your doctor.

Don't look for this information on the internet as there may be differences in the make-up of the tablets between different countries / factories / batches and you need the one appropriate to Ireland for today, not the USA 2 years ago.

Maybe the ol' English is letting me down but thanks for the replies anyway. To be clear, I'm not looking for medical advice, I've no shortage of that; I'm asking other persons' experiences. And, I'm doing that for the very reasons that you state, different people react differently. As far as reading the Lexapro leaflet is concerned - do I really come across as being so naive that this would not have been my first port of call? On the otherhand, Efexor also has a leaflet and makes not mention of the very unpleasent side effects of quitting the drug, any reason to believe that Lexapro's is not the same? BTW no-one in the medical world ever mentioned the withdrawl issues associated with Efexor, I discovered those for myself. Hence, my queries. I hope I have been a bit clearer this time.
